    Default Noise Noise Noise

    ******, ******, ******!!

    2003 2.2dti design 55,000 miles.

A couple of months back we started getting a noise from the front drivers side which I put down to wheel bearing, it started at around 45mph and got a little louder as the speed increased.
I put the job off until the noise became a real nuisance and progressed into a rhythmic thud or pulse.
Last weekend I changed the bearing and there is no improvement at all.
Recently it has had new shocks and I have since tried changing front tyres to back and vice verse.
The noise is now unbearable and the pulse is getting worse, it seems to come from both sides when going around a corner but is also sometimes apparent when traveling in a straight line.
It also seems to be linked to road speed and not engine revs.
If I allow the car to coast down a hill (clutch in, engine at tick-over) the noise is still there and lessens as speed decreases.

Anyone able to offer any possible causes.

    Sorry for the long post.

Now where did I put that box of matches!?!?

The last time I had this sort of symptom on a car it turned out to be a nail embedded in the tyre - it difficult to see unless you really looked carefully as the tread had sort of 'folded' over the head covering it up.

This caused a rythmic 'thump' that got worse with speed, but wasn't noticeable until you were going 30mph or more.

    Hi,
Thanks but by moving front tyres to back I think I have ruled that out.
I forgot to say that there is also a harsh vibration as well as the pulse, very similar to a worn bearing.
