What is done to the car in a major service? Could it be done at home and is any of it shown in the how 2's??

of course you can do it at home, providing you have the right tools..

major includes..
oil and filter
air filter
fuel filter
plugs ( mileage dependant)
remote key batterys
brake fluid change ( every two years)
visual corrosion inspection underneath
physical brake inspection and report
physical tyre inspection and report
fluid level tops ups.

every two years on brake fluid etc assuming it's serviced only once a year..

mine gets about 4 services a year, so it's all 'as and when needed'..
