    Default Steering rack play

Just had MOT which it passed but got an advisory O/S and N/S steering rack ball joint with slight play.
Is this something that will cost a packet next year, like a new steering rack or is there some kind of repair kit for this.

I asked if he meant track rod ends and he said no,its play in the rack.

Could be the track rod itself (not the ends), I have just replaced this myself after a shunt with a kerb. It bolts on to the steering rack, it has a ball joint you can see it if you remove the gaitor. pretty easy job to do. Mine cost £27 pounds from the dealer or you can get one from a motor factors about £15.

yep, the inner joints will have worn...kits from VX are model specific, so you'll have to take your VIN number in...worst case £26.25+V a side

It is Rushy, this is the mechanical link from the end of the rack bar to the track rods..the 'hydraulic' only ever referred to the assistance...

Thanks for the replies guys, that was what i was hoping would be the case.
The price of a new rack made me feel quite ill,the MOT tester said there was no parts available for this and insisted it would need a new rack.

Default Special Tool for Inner Track Rod Ends

I've been told that a special tool should be used to fit new inner track rod joints on my Vectra. (Apparently using a pair of stillson's instead often leads to a tight or ******ed steering rack). Anyone know anything about this tool, or how much it typically costs?

Hi mate, It's been a while since I did mine. as i recall I gained access from the wheel arch and used one of these http://www.halfords.com/webapp/wcs/s...egoryId_165469 to get the rod off. this was for the o/s. I can't give any advise for n/s. Hope this is of some help.
