side or rear?.. which side?..rpm dependant?

    :edit:..

thought more about this... there is nothing much on the back of the block..engine mount, driveshaft support bearing and thats about all that could move..

Side of the engine is different thou..the fact that it goes when you pick up the rpm slightly makes me think it's a belt flapping, like it's not tensioned correctly..Is it a metallic knock or a 'flappy' kind of sound?.. sat here trying to think of what will flag a fault code and could be related ( but also prompts limp home mode) all i can think is camshaft sensor/crankshaft sensor picking up a slight out of phase signal..

if you can lift the bonnet and look at the aux drive belt to see that it's not flapping up and down on the belt run, just running smoothly, then i'd be recommending you to get the car to a garage who can plug the faultcode reader in..that will list the fault and we'll know a whole lot more then....

Do something sooner rather than later, as the official belt change interval is 80K miles, but the 1800 has a nasty habit of the idler roller bearings seizing and breaking the cambelt (£££££'s to fix) thats why on the other 1800 fitments of the XE engine, VX later recommended dropping the interval to 40,000 miles...

    better safe than sorry eh?..

thanks for the reply. the noise is more metallic and the car is misfiring. i had the cambelt changed about 10k ago. the noise happens at about 1-2000 revs. i can't see any obvious movement from the belt. i've got it booked in at vx on thursday for tech2 and service, hopefully it will get me there cos its 20 miles away!

the only thing that i think it needs is a dis pack cos it had the same problem about 6 months ago after the floods. i took it to vx and they told me it needed one. when i drove it from the garage everything was back to normal so i didn't change it and its been ok until now, but this is the first time theres been a noise. i'll let you know asap what vx has to say

    Default is this possible?

just had a call from vx.they want £460 for a dis pack, air flow meter and an egr valve! is it possible for all of these parts to fail at the same time? i had a new egr from lmf about a year ago. how easy is it to fit an air flow meter? also how much? don't know what the knocking noise was cos it had stopped when i got there

air flow meter is just a couple of jubillee clips and around £100 to buy.. anyone with an 7mm socket can do it!!.. very unusual for it all to fail at once, i think they are trying to cover a lot of bases....

DIS pack failure is a common fault on 1.8's so that i can understand, but EGR failure at the same time??...

try ebay for the bits...much cheaper than dealer prices...
