Default Dubious about any gains from the Airbox Mod !!

After setting about the Airbox Mod tonight, I am now dubious as to any improvements/gains from this mod !!

    Here is my reason.

Removal of this turret will slow the rate that the forced cool air hits the back of the airbox

The Airflow meter has a trumpet on the end (Just by his thumb) of it which points to the location that the airbox turret directs the air..

Im certain that this trumpet is the reason why the airfilter is only dirty on one half as that is the area that it is being sucked through

Therefor removal of the Aibox turret makes no difference .. Although only time can truely tell i suppose, If a new filter is fitted at the time of the Turret removal & the airfilter once changed/inspected at a point in the future, Is either half dirty or fully dirty

    Opinions/arguments please .

    Cheers

    Dean

Dont really think it makes any difference tbh, I just think its there for sound suppression. Although if you remove the cone at the MAF then from what i'm aware it will actually lose torque and that's where we want to drive... good power at low revs.

    Interesting argument
reduced flow over half the filter at greater volume,.........or.............greater air flow at lower volume over a larger area of filter??......hmmmmmmmmmmmm
need an expert to figure this out, my brain aint as young as it used to be........

all i can tell you is that the GSi runs better without it fitted.....

the filter is dirty as the halfpipe covers 1/2 the filter, so only 1/2 the undersurface actually receives directed air...removing this pipe has meant that now all the underside of the filter is getting dirty as it receives air evenly..and it's not concentrating on the intake trumpet in the top of the airbox...

i did the air box mod
    removed trumpet
    added k&n air filter and
put the gsi shorter air intake pipe on last year
and i did notice the differance straight away
no more flat spots an exceleration and just seems to run a bit smoother
    even on my humble 1.8

What it might do is help suck the more concentrated air through the filter rather than soak through, am I making sense?

    Mr Moderator.

Has your Gsi been remapped though ?? So will be sucking harder due to more boost Etc, So may well possibly benifit from a grater surface area ..

Yessssssssss, but isnt the air being forced specifically to where its needed rather than all around the box?.just wondering?

yes, it's mapped, but it can only suck over the filter.. there is no forced induction on the 3.2's... the airbox mod was done before any mapping and thats where it was noticed...oh, and it's not 'mr moderator'....I'm Mark..

not really as different airbox lids pull the air off in different directions (3.2's leave to the right, 2.2's to the front, 2.0T's to the rear..etc etc) and too many folks have reported good results from their cars for it to be a placebo effect...
