Default An odd poll, from an odd person !

This is a poll to get answers from people on a common problem . . . . (I said it was an odd poll for my first poll on here)

    Consider ......
A fridge, with the door wide open, is placed in a room that is completely perfectly thermally insulated (ie NO heat transfer into / out of the room).

When the temperature had completely stabilised in the room the fridge was turned on, what would happen to the room temperature over time??

I'll give the correct answer later.....

It would warm up. The appliance is not efficient enough to cool in equal volumes to the heat it generates in running.

Its to do with effiency i think. Nothing it 100% efficient, there is always a loss. so more power would be used in order to try to cool the room. thus giving off a greater heat to coolness ration, so I reckon the room would get warmer... Or i could be talking a load of old crap

    its a fake

you need to know the temperature of the room
and you also need to know the temperature setting on the fridge it may never switch on

    Ok I'm in.

The fridge will not make cold air as the door is open and anything above freezing point in the room will ensure that the fridge has no chance of making and cool air, almost like one bloke trying to move 5 blokes, they cancel him out due to mass and volume, then the heat generated by the coolant radiator should increase the room temp as the room is sealed so the heat cannot escape.

That's my answer and I'm sticking to it even if it maybe Wong said Mr Woo.

And what is the "stabilised" room temperature?

However, since a fridge works by removing heat from the atmosphere,I would say that so long as the fridge actually works,it will make the room colder.

    Think aircon.

If we're assuming that the fridge's thermostat is set such that it will turn on - which it should do given the range of fridge thermostats - then the room will gradually warm up. Basically the heat generated by the heat exchanger in trying to cool the ambient air entering the fridge is more than any cooling effect of the inside of the fridge on this air - so the room will gradually warm up, and you'll also have a larger electricity bill!

How big is the "room" ?

The question leads me to believe that this doesn't really matter. It could be slightly bigger than the fridge with its door open or an aircraft hangar, the effect should still be the same.

How big is the fridge - for example it could be one of those mini fridges (as used by top gear for the super cool db9 section of the cool wall) of an industrial fridge used in cold stores?

i think once we know this we will be able to figure out the correct answer....
