18's would win hands down on those criteria.....the smaller the rim, the better the ride comfort..

    18's every time mate..

Damageability depends on your driving and the type of rim you go for,Tyres fitted(Rim protector's) not really much to do with the size of them.

I moved up to 18" Astra VXR snowflakes from 17" SRI rims. It's been the best mod I've done. Handling far better, tyres loads quieter (Sport contact 2's). The ride is a little harder but the positives far out weigh this.

If you can get hold of a decent set of 18's for me it's the best way to go.

I've got 19's and i dont find them a problem at all and i live right out in the sticks, the ride gets a bit hard with the sports button on but thats why i ordered the car with IDS+ for the handling and i'll more than likely be uprating the springs so it will only get better
I may also change the wheels, if i do i'll be replacing them with 19's again..

We have 22's on our shogun warrior and they are not a problem either..

I've had cars with a worse ride on smaller wheels, My Sierra & Saphire cossie's had 15" standard rims with 50 profile tyres (dunlop sp40's replaced with Yokohama's which had a slick outer edge for enhanced cornering ) and the ride was solid on both of them so it also depends on your suspension setup....

I love my 19's and would only swap them for other 19's
