    Angry Alternator fault

Hi,I'm new to the forum and need a bit of help and advice.
Driving home and the alternator light came on, along with that spanner on the car light (technical I Know). Are both these problems related or seperate issues and is the car safe to drive down to the nearest vx dealer.

    Any advice would be welcome.

    same problem....

it's safe to drive as long as the belt is still in place...just do it in full daylight as no charge may be getting into the battery...

Be prepared for a reasonably big bill as the alternators aren't cheap at VX....

What could be done is have an Independant garage remove your alternator and see if its the diode pack that has gone, this can be replaced by a alternator specilaist quite cheaply. Depends though if you can afford to have the car off the road for a few days though.. Just a thought..

and a very good one...both the diode and the rectifier packs cost little, compared to an alternator replacement at VX...As the car is well out of warranty, use an independant garage and save big bucks.....

if you have access to a multimeter, the terminals should produce a reading of 12v without the engine running and around 13.8- 14.5v with it running if the alternator is healty..

    Default alternator

Thanks for that info, just been looking through extended warranty I took out and hopefully alternator is covered.
My concerns are that when I lifted the bonnet to have a butchers, water level was very high and engine seemed to be sucking in air. Gonna ring warranty people before I book it in with vx.
