    Default Hemel Hempstead Explosion.

    http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/uk/4517962.stm

I was in the shower, getting ready for work this morning, just after 6.00, when I heard and felt this explosion. That depot is about 15-18 miles away from my house !!!
Glad I dont work on that industrial estate anymore, cos I did a couple of years back.
God help all those that would still have been working there.

This has been in the news here from early afternoon our time. The plume of smoke looks to be of a massive scale.

Hope all of you in the area are OK.

Just down the road from me so I went off to get some pics for you guys. I personally slept through the bang but it seems I am the only one that did in our area... Overheard a police conversation saying that every building around it is melting - as they are all prefab. Bad stuff. Would be pleased to hear from Doug though as Mark said..

(Second from last photo is police lady walking away after telling me I had 30 seconds to move or she'd nick me.... twice in a week I've been in trouble getting photo's for this site!!!)

Just been down for another look, even from 3 or 4 miles away the sky is orange, Nikki (my other half) was actually quite jittery in the car becuase it really is quite a scary seen to see. A lot of the local residents have been evacuated so it might just be that Doug is not able to log on. Fingers crossed for you fella get in touch as soon as.

Default Well, what a Sunday that was!!!

Well what a Sunday that was! And thanks for the thoughts from (amongst others) Mark, R-man and Ed.
Almost it’s almost unbelievable that such a scale of destruction has resulted in not a single fatality. It could have been so much worse.
We live in Leverstock Green itself, about a mile and a half across fields from the Buncefield Depot – consequentally our village has suffered the full force of the impact. Literally shaken out of bed at six yesterday morning, immediately followed by an unbelievable bang, which again shuddered the house and set off all the car and house alarms. The loft hatches disappeared into the attic and there was dust and yellow roof insulation all over the place. Everyone was out in the close in dressing gowns in the freezing morning trying to figure out what has happened. We could see the flames in the sky to the north but assumed it was a plane that had crashed.
Watching Sky News a few minutes later (by far the best coverage) we saw that it was the Buncefield Depot – and horror struck me because a good friend is a shift worker for BP at that very terminal. I phoned his house immediately and was so happy when HE answered the phone.
Oh yes, and two of my boys (the 16 and 14 year olds) both managed to sleep through it all – totally oblivious to the events, until they were woken within minutes by their mates texting them.
The other side of the village has suffered the most damage and those houses have been evacuated. Lots of my kids’ friends are staying in hotels or with family, having spent some hours in the “reception centre” at Jarman Park Leisure World (known locally as Wally World). The evacuees were made as comfortable as possible there and Burger King, McDonnalds, etc. put on lots of free food and the children were given free passes into the cinema.
We’ve suffered some structural damage to our house, but thankfully our windows are intact – I think, possibly because we sleep with the bedroom windows open, so there’s somewhere for the blast to go. But we’ve now got a very nice full height vertical crack in the house back wall brickwork, where the extension joins the main structure, with matching cracks through the plaster inside (upstairs and downstairs), plus cracked lintel brickwork over a window. I’m putting an insurance claim in today, but I assume TotalFina (or whoever) will pick up the bill.
Still that’s all just bricks and mortar and can be sorted out by builders in the new year, Just happy that we’re all okay, if a little shaken and can look forward to a super Christmas – before the builders move in!!!
Kids are delighted to all be off school today, the missus less pleased though!
The M1’s open now, but none of the junctions near Hemel are operating – but I had no difficulty getting to work on the old A5. Getting petrol tonight may be somewhat more of a challenge!!!
Oh yes, on a trivial note - the Vectra’s totally unscathed, but I do need to get it well washed and polished soon, before any of the “fallout” damages the paint!
R-man's right, I couldn't get a connection at home at all yesterday.
    Doug
