your asking two different questions here....

Polish will remove some of the paint to flatten and remove minor swirls, oxidation etc altho be it a few microns and afterwards leaves no protection behind. so in a sense polish will only give a shine.

Wax or Sealants give a increase in the depth of shine and these will last anywhere from 1 month to 12 months in some cases but the average being 4-6

which came first, the chicken or the egg? hows longs a piece of string? sorry to be a wee bit flippant but thats the sort of question you just asked! Different combinations of polish, glaze, sealants and waxes give different results in terms of shine, depth of shine, bringing out the flecks in the paint etc. Plus then theres how easy they are to apply, some are machine only for example. Best thing is to start slowly with the megs 3 stages and add to it form there until your happy (but I bet you never get there - like everyone else)

totally agree with ian, firstly in that it is far too broad a question, and secondly, if you're only starting out then megs 3 stage is decent.

LOL, simple mistake mate. For wax at this time of year then it has to be the Collinite range. But for summer why not try some Zymol Vintage at only £1852 per 523g tub

IMHO Autoglym Super Resin Polish, available from Halfords and most other motor factors places.

SRP has abrasives to clean the paint, fillers to mask scratches and resins to give protection.

As said above best used as a combination, If you get SRP and Autoglym Extra Gloss Protection which is a sealant that goes on after polishing I'm confident you will be happy with the results.

If you get more into Detailing you can spend loads (as per Rushy's link), but these two products cost about a fiver each and are a great place to start.

Also mate, it depends on what colour your car is. Some work better on some colour's and some on others, some polish and wax combinations will give you better flake pop, some better at giving warmth or depth. TBH every one here will give you a different answer and all will be right as its mostly down to personal taste. I weened myself into it with the Megs DC1,2,3 range from my local Halfords, then moved on from there when I had a good practical knowledge of how each stage worked. This is why Detailing costs so much as there is always a new product to try. Get yourself over to Detailing World and have a look around, be prepared its information over load though.
