    Default Replacement Windscreen Query

Noticed a big scratch in Windscreen today so phoned insurance company which put me straight through to AutoGlass.

They asked a few questions which in hindsight not sure if I have given the right answer to one of them.

They asked if my car has rain sensor - No. No probs.

They asked if the car had green sun strip - Don't think so.

Asked if car had a green tint on windscreen. Answered no it was plain but thinking about it I haven't really checked / noticed before. I think it may be tinted as the tail light cluster is tinted on the SRi and plane on design etc. so is the screen the same?

The car is a standard SRi 2004MY. HELP!!

Look at the identification 'stamp' on the bottom corner of the screen on the passenger side. If you want the same again, just give them the letters that are on there - they'll know which one you'll need.

If you're not fussed about having a sunstrip, I'd specify the original Vx one if I was you - the insurers shouldn't have a problem with that as you're replacing like with like. Unless you say anything to AG you'll just get the non Vx one - probably just as good (although I've heard otherwise). If you do want the sunstrip it'll have to be the non-Vx one as Vx no longer make screens with the sunstrip.

same thing happened to my old vec.

Chap came with 'wrong' windscreen with the sunstrip. He suggested re-scheduling but I had different ideas.

Looked far better than the standard heat reflective it replaced.

If you have your windscreen changed and you do have the rain sensing wipers fitted, Make sure they fit a new sensor, not prise off your old one and try to fix it back on..

The wipers have never worked properly since that visit by RAC autoscreens and it looks like i'll now have to pay for a new sensor and fitting..all because the windscreen company wants to cut a corner.. . VX said that the actions of the fitter now mean that the warranty as far as the rain sensing goes is null.

    Not a good Friday morning..

And the RAC don't want to know...

That isn't good m8 - in fact it's downright disgusting. The screens come with the rain sensor fitted so why the hell did they need to prise off the old one!!? Can you not go back to them (RAC) and give them hell? I assume it was through your insurer? Get onto them and let them know, they'll soon be on RAC's case.

After I had my screen replaced my rain sensors worked better! They weren't as sensitive as I wanted them and that was fixed with the new sensor.

You're not wrong on the disgusting front...

The screen came out without a sensor fitted. When i asked it was a case of 'they're all like this, I just swop the sensor'..

Not being the 'expert', I just let him get on with it..Now my insurers don't give a hoot either way ( just wait till renewal time ) and the rac say its me against him..

The phrase 'banging heads' and 'brick wall' spring to mind..The 'phone was red hot on friday..The money isn't the worry..I'll put it on out of pocket expense's..But it's the principle now..

From previous experiences with cars other than my Vectra I have found that Autowindscreens (now owned and branded as RAC) use pattern glass. Autoglass use OEM glass. If it's an insurance job go always go for Autoglass. If it's out your own pocket (ie TPFT insurance) then RAC are much cheaper for the private punter.
