    confused broke vectra 1.9 cdti

    hi guys,
my 1st post, i drive a 1.9 cdti sri estate, done 28000 miles, owned since 10 months old, bought it with 11000 miles. up till now had trouble free motoring. but just before chrimbo, spanner light came on and the car seemed sluggish. thought at 1st was just bad driving but round town the car was dangerous to drive, pulling out at junctions, roundabouts it just had no acceleration but once up to speed seemed better but still not right.
i didn't want to take to platinum as i've never really liked them, so took to my local garage, they weren't too keen on working on the car as they didn't have info on the more modern vectras. but hats off to them, they had a go, they checked on their comp, checked all filters, hoses etc. they seemed to think it was air flow meter, ordered 1, tried it today, but didn't solve the problem and they did not charge me a penny to find this out.
so i've had to take the car to platinum, put on their comp, told me it's the egr valve, according to them diesel filter was 100% blocked(not sure if this is correct term) and the software will need updating(what?) £260
i asked if there was any guarantee on the work solving the problemand they said no !!

i'm not sure whether to get platinum to do the work or take back to the local garage and tell them what platinum told me? i'm not technically minded, so diy is a definate no no.

any ideas, tips would be greatly appreciated.

    thanks
    dave

daft question, but is the car not under warranty? if not I would look for a local independent vaux specialist.

Does the car actually cut out? When i had my astra the egr valve blocked up on me, and the car would cut out as slowed to stop at junctions etc
It was a little while ago now but i'm sure it cost less than £100 for a new valve and that was from the stealers.

Mine started tonight with the dreaded spanner too, it's a company car so won't cost me a penny but a pain in the asss all the same.

    Hope you get it sorted

Right lets try to make some sense of this...

    a) Diesel filter blocked - theres a filter which seperates water from the diesel in the engine bay but this cannot become 100% block. its like a filter in a hoover really...

    b) an egr valvue opens and shuts and lets the exhaust gases recirculate to be reburnt again before being passed out. This can become blocked and defective. I've seen one which was removed and it was very mucky. Even on my 05 plate one they took out yesterday needed a good clean up.. So this COULD be what they out talking about being 100% blocked.. Think these valves are about £70 or so.

Your garage can change the EGR valve quite easily shouldnt be a problem for them. As for the software i've not heard of them upgrading it with the problems you've presented with. Maybe ask them what system/module the update will have an effect on?

Maybe they're just updating it so you've got the latest revision, but not heard of it being done to effect the way the EGR valve works..

There was an ecu update for the egr valve, it is supposed to help it self clean. (i think it vibrates or open and closes very quickly at certain times to help prevent build up of deposits on the shaft of the valve). If they are stuck open they can cause all sorts of starting problems.

Are they perhaps talking about the DPF Diesel Particulate Filter, Saying that that has become blocked & the controller software on that needs updating !!!

I have an Estate Cdti 150 & have just had the Dpf controller software updated & a regeneration of the filter, This was done as a recall though as there is an issue.

Mines a 54 plate. I believe yours will have the Dpf being an Estate & the Sri Livery.
