Default urgent help needed re signum and dealer

    Hi,

took girlfriends car (Signum Design 1.9 CDTI 150 75 k mileage) into dealership yesterday as steering was all over the shop (just been given it as a company car). Because the wheel was moving about even at slow speeds I put it down to worn ball joints. The steering wheel shake was very bad! I would use the word violent.
I dismissed the idea of wheels being unbalanced because it was happening at all speeds whereas previous expereince has shown it tends to happen at higher speeds 65-75mph with balancing and never this bad.

Also checked the rear suspension trailing arms (while on the ground pulled the top of the wheel in and out) which had about 1cm of movement in.

Garage have phoned up and said:

Rear trailing arms are fine and the wheels need balancing.

Will road check it before I take is back but how could I have been so wrong about the steering? And the rear trailing arms, did I check them right? Would you consider they were worn with 1 cm movement?

Comments please.................... before I go to collect the car tonight

    Thanks

Don't know about the arms but when I first had a new pair of tyres (put on back, back moved to front) I had wheel shake at all speeds, turned out that the balance weights had fallen off the back wheels almost immediately. Had them balanced again but still had some shake about 65+ and had to have the fronts balanced (didn't get them done when they were moved back to front). Still not completely happy with it, but I put it down to the fronts being NCT5's so I may be replacing them soon!

Has the Signum had new tyres recently? Been kerbed?

I had some 19" wheels fitted and non of the wheels where balanced, (at all well they where but for the old tyres) it was like driving a bucking bronco ride and made me feel sick !! you could feel the wobble at all speeds the balancing was out so much

    worth getting them checked,

Hmmm seems I could have been wrong about the ball joints then

Exactly the same as you had. Seems someone was driving the car regulary before my girlfriend got it and said it was fine. Strange that someone would not have noticed the steering wheel judder

It appears not to have new tyres but the steering must have been like it for a while and no one reported it or done anything about it. It is that violent that I would have said something more was wrong than just balancing. Even that there had been some impact/accident damage.
But it seems i might be wrong

It makes you wonder sometimes how much people take notice of their car and do not even realise anything is wrong

All 4 tyres where changed by some monkey at the dealer , they left the old weights on with new tyres so a total mis match, I could feel the back end shuddering up the road and couldn't do more that 40mph due to the steering wheel hurting my arms so much !! , it felt like I had 4 square wheels

hope its just the balancing m8

    Cheers Mark

I think my problem is I pick up very quickly on anything wrong with my cars and get it sorted asap, knowing if it is left it will only get worse.

So when the girlfriend gets a car in such poor shape I think the worst.

Not everyone cares about their cars as much as we do on the forum when it comes down to safety

    Quick update:

The dealer finally worked out that the front wheel was buckled and not just balancing.

    So what did they do?..............

Put the buckled wheel from the front on the back and said it would be alright!

As regards the rear trailing arms, even tho there was movment in them it would pass an mot so they are fine and do not need replacing.
Surely this effects the handling as it did on the previous Vectra C which had a rear end twitch until they were replaced.

Now although they have saved my girlfriends company money I would not say they are correct in what they have done, what do you all think??????

A dealer turning down work, now thats a first!!!!
