Default Sat Nav systems - advice needed

Seeing as some of you lot appear to be experts in sat nav and stuff. - a subject I am woefully inept.

I am looking to buy something for xmas, and would like to have input as to what to buy. For this I want to it on a budget, with low price being important. I have some software that I have previously used on a laptop and it is very good. Can't remember what software it was though.

So, what do I need? Guessing at a PDA and a GPS receiver, and then download the software to it. Is this OK to do, can it be done easily etc etc etc

Please help me navigate (no pun intented) the minefield of PDA, palm pilot etc on the market, what memory is good / bad etc, capabilities of the unit etc

    Basically please help me.......................

If you don't want to get involved in the technical bit, I'd just go for one of the Tom Tom units. the one or the Go 300.
Otherwise, you're best looking at globalpositioningsystems.co.uk or somewhere similar -they'll do you a complete PDA based package, with software, GPS and all the cables.

Yep, go for an all in one unit...there are some threads on here about them, but the tomtom is the easiest to use.. they all have their faults, but tomtom have just brought out the tomtom one, which looks the doggies.

    Too much money, I'm afraid.
Like I said I have the software, just need the hardware. But the choice is so large I don't know what to look for.

Any advice on PDA hardware only, the GPS sensor bit is easy to get fairly cheaply, or should i go for inbuilt into the PDA?????

I've just bought an HP2210 PDA with 1Gb CF card, GPR receiver, Tom Tom 3 and it works like a dream. Paid £150 on flea-bay.... I bought a bluetooth GPS receiver extra to save having wires everywhere.
There are plug in GPS units but as these plug into the CF slot, it would be no use for me as the software is on my CF card. I suppose i could buy an SD card and put the software on that leaving the CF slot free.

I was looking for the HP RX3115 or 3715 as they also have WIFI but were going for too much.
