Default PC or Mac simple as that!

Been pondering a new PC recently, We (the family and I) use the PC for the email, internet and for photo storage mainly....

The Mac is the tool of choice I believe with media peeps...so I was curious what the usage was here and is it any good?

PC World (really hate PC World but it is a good deal) were doing one for £299 in their sale which would cover all your needs. Avoid the Mac as it is mainly a design icon/very serious use. Problems would occur if you had issues and they needed sorting, how many friends do you know who own Macs? You will get a lot more power/software for your money with the PC.

At the risk of being flamed on the PC vs Mac vs Linux debate, I'd go for PC mainly because of the range of available apps and likely support.

It's also far more relevant for my job (PC that is), and I do some on-line FPS gaming which needs PC.

I've seen people quote Apple as the top dog in media apps and I suspect there's some truth in that, but what you get included and what you need to pay extra for I'm less sure of.

For email and Internet any of the 3 would do. Linux helps is you're technically minded especially if you need to tweak some configs.

Thing is with PC you can get simple free apps such as Paint.net which has a lot of photo editing capability at no cost. You can get free most things these days, including office (openoffice.org) on PC.

End of the day see if you can visit a couple of shops and get to play on an Apple system and see what you think, then compare like for like (£ wise) with a PC system.

Buy a Mac mate, they just work... perform well, look good, have much better integration with PC (hardware and software) and you'll never get a Blue Screen Of Death!

You don't need friends if you have a Mac 'cos they don't break :-)

    Classic!!!

PC for me, always has been - even though I'm one of the 'media' sorts. It did use to be the case that certain apps, like Photoshop, video editing etc., came out for Mac first - but that changed some time back. A number now come out on PC first, or at least at the same time as Mac. macs used to rule in the video editing area, but again now not the case. A lot of high-end studios etc. are using PCs, as are others using Macs - no longer is it Macs dominance in those areas.

I prefer PCs as they have more apps, are easier to expand and twiddle with instead of the closed architecture of Macs.

EDIT: BTW you didn't give an option of a PC with Linux!

That's a very good point as well - the expand and twiddle bit.

I took "A N Other" to mean that, unless you want me to get a quote for a mainframe system - and beleive me you won't be "twiddling" with one of those!

With the latest Intel Macs you could dual-boot with Windows XP or Vista via Bootcamp and have the best (or worst) of both worlds.

Personally I'd go the PC route.
