Default wired 4 rooms up to view sky (+ magic eye)

Feeling pleased with myself – wired up 4 of the rooms in the house to receive sky signal (via standard sky digi box, not moved to sky plus yet) from the box downstairs (and fitted the magic eye in our bedroom to change channels remotely).

I thought I would pass on the info I picked up.

I already had a signal booster/splitter in the system which I bought ages ago but I was advised that you need to get a more modern booster/splitter if you want the magic eye to work. The booster/splitter below (A240D – 4 way splitter) was recommended to me – cost around £25.

The tv in the lounge has picture in picture facility so I sent the loft signal Ariel down to the digi box and connected it to the Ariel socket.
The RF1 output goes to the tv in the living room (this gives terrestrial tv channels and sky – which lets me see two channels at the same time) and the RF2 output goes up to the splitter/booster box in the loft (into UHF input to splitter box). The magic eye needs the 9v (RF2) option selected on the sky box before it will work (this is accessed [toggle ON/OFF] via a hidden menu on the sky box).

Another thing get good cable - I got 100m drum of 75ohm low loss screened coax for £40 (you should get a good discount if you buy a full reel) – don’t get the cable from places like Homebase.

Yes, we used to have the magic eye in our bedroom running off the powered RF outlet.

Easy and quick to do, the eye can be bought very cheaply of Ebay. I've seen them in the shops as a kit for £30 which is WAY more than you need to pay.

Basically the eye and some co-ax from the look of them. I didn't buy a kit, just the eye, and 10m of co-ax from the co-ax shop for a lot less.

Interesting, I put wires for sky into all the bedrooms in the new house before the partitions wen`t up , and 4 to the dish as well, wasn`t sure whether to put a box in the bedroom as an extra, or use the eye . I think the eye is the way to go though . It just plugs into the rf cable does it, an extra cable doesn`t have to be run ?? Advantage obviously will be that you can put a flat tv on the wall with no box to worry about ??

Yes, the eye just fits between the existing co-ax and the TV aerial input. It is powered from the RF line (need to enable the power via a 'secret' menu on the receiver, and uses the existing remote via the eye on the unit. See the ebay link above for the eye itself. Takes about 5 minutes to do, doesn't need an extra cable run and is very easy with no tools needed. It connects to one of the RF out on the back of the existing Sky receiver box.

For info the connections on the Splitter/Booster box and the input to the magic eye were the F-Type connectors.

Done something similar, we have a sat dish with an 8way LNB with 1 Sky+, 1 Sky+HD and 2 digiboxes and 2 eyes on the digiboxes.

Only problem with the eyes is that you have to watch the same SKY channel on all Tv's thats why we went with seperate boxes, Not everyone wants to watch Discovery channel when i do..

Tom, the secret engineer / installer menu is found on sevices, 4, then 0 1 select then RF outlets, then set to on

as B-P, easy to get the RF powered, but the options aren't listed on the menus, that's all.

But, alas, all connected TV's show the same channel. But that was OK for us, as we only watch Tv in bed at night..
