    Default oil light

just wanna pick some brains, got a 2.0 dti 03' quite often when the car has been running a while an its' stationary the oil light will come on or just flicker, it the goes off when i increase my speed, i'm not overly concerned as the manual says it's okay as long as it goes off but only had the car about 3 months and it didn't do it at all in the first month.

It could be bad oil... or a sludged up oil filter or a combination of both. Thin runny oil... trying to be pumped though a slugged up filter will restrict the flow of oil to the top end of the engine.

    BUT....!!!!

flickering oil pressure light at Idle is classic symptoms of A failing oil pump. As you Rev.. the pump oil pressure increases enough to put the light out.. but may not provide enough pressure to lubricate the engine fully.

Does the flickering light become constant at ilde when the car/engine is hot??? Again if so then as this is a sign of a failing oil pump.

The oil gets thinner and less viscous as the engine warms up, making it more difficult for the pump to produce the required oil pressure.

Or it could be something as simple as a faulty sensor..... but they normally fail completely... ie.. no oil pressure showing all the time. very rare for a sensor to 'go out of calibration'.

best way to proove this.. is to ask a garage to remove the sensor and put a mechanical Guage on in its place.. and rev the engine up too confirm exaclt what pressure is there.

    hope this is of help

    cheers

    Vinny

Bad news. I had this on an Alfa and it was low oil pressure either by the pump or by the pickup due to poor servicing or/and wrong oil. Does it get worse if stuck in traffic for a long time and if you increase the revs it goes out? Is the engine noisy when the light is on? The Alfa never died on me just go so noisy over a period of 6 months that I had to trade it in before it let me down.

If you bought it from a garage take it back ASAP.

i would deffo not drive the car as it will only destroy things internally if the pump is failing (only drive too a garage if you have too!!)

The items furthest away from the pump and the Highest up from ur sump will be effected first (gravity has a big effect on a failing oil pump.. simply because it struggles too pump up hill!!) ... Hydraulic cam followers will start knocking as there not getting enough oil... This will cause rapid wear and tear on the camshaft and followers... then will gradually get worse and get to the bottom end..... the turbo could even fail if the Bearings dont get enough oil.

    BAD NEWS!!

Light does not appear when engine is cold, only after about 10 mins of driving.

While sat in traffic light is on, and goes off after 1500 revs. with a very slight flicker at about 1400 revs.

I've done about 100 miles in it today....probably killed it.

This is a 75000 mile 04 car that has only been serviced at Vauxhall, and most recently 9000 miles ago.

I wouldnt panic just yet..... but its classic oil pump failing!!! I deffo wouldnt do anymore miles in it!! Im 80% certain its an oil pump problem... however a good old filter and oil change might cure it.. as it could have one seriously clogged up oil filter. I'd goto halfords before it closes at 8 and Get them changed!!!... nice fresh oil and filter (this is the cheaper option and might just solve it) If not... and its exactly the same afterwards.. then its only £30 quid or so that you've wasted. If your not able to change the oil and filter your self and ur taking it to a garage.. then get them to put a pressure guage on her while its there and see what the story is.

hope its not terminal matey!! fingers crossed!!
