Question 54 reg 2.0 dti spanner light on cold start

as the Title says, I've got a new to me 54 reg 2.0 dti. When I start it cold, the spanner light comes on for about 2-3 minutes. It clears itself by the time I've driven away, and only comes on when I start it cold. I've read in another thread that it is probably one or more the glow plugs.

How hard are they to get at on this engine?

Are there other things that would cause the spanner light to come on only on a cold start?

    Thanks

Default Lamp on when Starting from Cold

Its probably a faulty glow plug, the lamp usually comes on when starting from cold as the ecu sees the glow plugs as being faulty.
After a few minutes when they are no longer in use the ecu resets the lamp and its switches it off.
Get some one to check them,
Its probably glow plug 2 0r 3 as they are the most common to go.
New plugs are about a tenner each

They're on the back of the engine on the head - you'll not miss them. 10 minute job to change them once you get the engine cover off.

Thats brilliant. Will probably just go ahead and replace all 4. What is a good place to get them from. Halfrauds quoted me £16 each, and a 3 days to get them in.

    I bought a set from a local motor factors. £10.50 each NGK's.

Be careful when removing as number 2 and 3 on mine had near enough welded to the head and took 3 or 4 threads out with it. needed to re-tap number 2 (which was the worst) to get the new ones in.

Ended up getting them from Approach Vx in Salisbury. £10-70 and in stock. Replaced 3 of the 4 today and that has cured the light. Those connectors are a pain to get off. I gave up on the one below the intake pipe for the moment. Will try it again over the weekend if the weather decides to cooperate.

Also did the clutch spring mod today. Makes a nice difference on the pedal feel.
