confused to flush or not to flush

that is the question, ive always been told not to flush out engines as it can do more harm than good so ive never done it .Ive got an 04 plate siggy 2.2 dti elite auto diesel, the oil is as black as the ace of spades so i want to change the oil and i dont know what todo regarding flushing.this is the first time ive had a diesel so im a bit thick regarding these engines, also is the gearbox an integral part of engine same as the old mini was. any informed opinums would be most welcome thanks tony

    Diesel oil is typically dirtier
With the longer service intervals the amont of contaminants is now very high
So long as you replace the oil AND oil filter at the prescribed intervals, there shouldn't be any issues

As for flushing, that is personal preference, I haven't seen any proof either way
However, with flushing you remove all the tiny elements that can help seal small holes which the oil forces into the gaps

down to personel choice mate, i have never done it and i know a few mechanics who say it doesn't realy matter that much, just as long as you drop your oil at regular intervals then you should be ok.......

Flushing can cause problems as the contaminants that are dislodged can settle elsewhere and cause major problems, it's not something I would do if I haven't owned the car for it's life and flushed it every time.

As has been stated, as long as you follow the service regime, there shouldn't be a problem. In 26 years as a diesel fitter I have never flushed on an oil change, and no, the gearbox isn't an integral part of the engine for lubrication purposes.
