Default Just been quoted for a new ECU :(

Just been quoted £770 inc fitting for a new ECU by the local vauxhall garage. 2004 2.0 turbo SRI with 26k on the clock. The car went in with a fault of the engine randomly cutting out and then not being able to start for quite some time. Apparently there was a error with the ECU and it needs replacing Does this price sound about right ?

Car was brought about 4.5 months ago so is out of the 3month warranty although i did have this cutting out problem once within the 3 months and then twice after so citizens direct say that i have a good case and I fully intend to fight it of course!

Oh just to add that £60 of this cost was for the diagnostic to find out what the problem was...

I'd go back to the Vx dealer and have a word asking them to be "reasonable" and "come to a compromise" on meeting some of the costs towards the new ECU. Say its unreasonable that a part such as the ECU should fail 3 months out of warranty. You may get them to pay 50% (or less). Its worth a try and you've nothing to lose. Lots of people on here have been in a similar situation where a serious fault has occured just out of the warranty and Vx have been sympathetic.

Would love to have done this, however I didn't buy the car from them, got it from a different dealer who currently is being very unreasonable. Even though I had to call the RAC out during the 3 month warranty period to deal with the fault, they are not prepared to do anything about it or contribute towards the costs as i didnt report it to them until 4 weeks after the warranty expired

Doesn't matter who you've bought it from, Get in touch with VX, there's no way in this world, 3 1/2 years is an adequate service life for an ECU.

I dont think it matters that you didnt buy the car from a Vx dealer - have you asked a Vx dealer about the problem? If the car was in warranty, you'd take it to a Vx garage to be fixed, even though its out of warranty I'd still take it back to the Vx garage.

Just take it to your nearest (reputable) Vx dealer.
