Default May be in the market for a new TV....

Basically I presently have a 44' Sony rear projection set.
When I got it 4 1/2 years ago it was an award winning best buy set etc.
I paid £1800 for it (that was a good deal then so it shows how much big screen prices have come down), and fortunately it came with a 5 year warranty.
Over the past few months the picture has been getting quite bad, not at all sharp like it was, and very blurred around the edges of the pictures.
Anyhow the engineer has been out twice and cant sort it, so it's now going into the workshop. The warranty says if it can't be repaired then they will replace the set with a new spec/value equivalent.
The engineer said he wasnt hopeful at a succesful repair....so I might be jumping the gun a bit but what would you reccomend as a replacement?
I dont want to go any smaller than I have at present (44') but make?
    LCD or Plasma?

    Plasma all the way.

http://www.avland.co.uk/pioneer/pdp428xd/pdp428xd.htm is a great set, don't be put off at being "only" 720p, pioneer recently said they have no plans to release a 1080p 42" as their current one looks better in overall picture fidelity than the competitions 1080p sets. I have to agree

    LCD all the way!

Seriously, for top end kit, I would look at both, and see which you prefer. I went for LCD, but the latest plasma's are superb too:

    e.g.

    Pioneer PDP-LX508D (plasma)
    Panasonic TH-50PZ700PED (plasma)
    Sony Bravia KDL-52X3500 (lcd)

LX508D would be the one to go for if you can cope with the price, quick search cheapest i saw was £3,280.

LCD may be preferable if you have one of those wife things that insist on having curtains open instead of the correct closed position!

yeah the problem is fixed, i think it moves or flickers faster that your eyes can actually see which stops screen burn. something along those lines

It all depends on what you are going to be viewing on your screen, and in what conditions.

For viewing "Blade Runner Final Cut" in the dead of night in a darkened room, I would choose a Plasma without hesitation (better blacks).

For viewing an XBOX game, or general TV programs in moderate light, an LCD is going to be brighter overall.

The latest Sony X3500 series LCD does have better black definition than mine does (a KDL-40X2000), but it's still the case that something like the Pioneer Kuro will have even better black definition, and deeper dark colours (e.g. in Blade Runner) if that's what you want.

Also, to drive these screens properly, you really need a decent HD source. My upscaling dvd player does OK, but a Blu Ray player is better. XBox360 looks good on the lcd.

My bruv in law got a 50" plasma. He can nearly heat his home off it & it seriously has doubled his electricity bill.
I'm currently looking to go a LCD, Sony do a 46" screen and there are some great bargains about t the mo.

Well thanks guys, I am thinking LCD. I have got a new Xbox 360 for crimbo so a nice HD LCD would look good.
I like the idea of a plasma, but I think LCD would be better as a general TV/XBOX set-up.
Will have to wait and see what happens with mine, dont mind at all if they can mend it, but as the engineer said... "I'm not hopeful", in which case time to go shopping!

a major factor is how much light is in the room you will be watching it in ... Plasmas are like mirrors and the LCD doesnt reflect the light

as has been pointed out Plasmas show the black more but overall LCD is probably a better buy
