    Default Auto Gearbox Question...

OK firstly it's not a Vec gearbox but, my uncle has come to stay and the auto 'box on his car has become very 'clunky' on the way down here, a long motorway drive.
Can this be caused by a low oil level within the auto 'box or is it likely to be more expensive.
When I say 'clunky' I mean to say that as you move the selector from P to say reverse gear it is accompanied by a mecahnical thud.

If it's likely to be oil then we'll check it tomorrow after we've warmed it up.

    Ta.

It does sound like a fluid issue but when you top up make sure you use the right viscosity....my friend put the wrong one in his rover and it ruined the box.

Im sure some others will reply soon so be patient.

    What car is it ??

Cheers mate. The car is a Hyundai Sonata thing. It's on an S plate but has only done 50K so I would be surprised if the 'box was on it's way out entirley.

I too would say check the oil level. but also as ninja said make sure you put the correct oil in. But I wonder if a brakeband is on the way out?

Hangon Ken, it's hilly down near you isn't it, tell him to try pulling the handbrake on firm and allow the slack to move before engaging P, I get this on inclines in all my auto's I've had, it's the gearbox taking up the roll, I bet it's stiff coming out of P as well and then you get the clunk?

This might be a bit confusing the way I wrote it, but it's basically if you sling it in P and come off the brake, the car lurches a few inches, doing the above prevents this happening, hth.

Well just checked it, and the dipstick for the auto box is dry.....!
Needs a little oil then, that might explain why its clunking!

At least you now have a good idea to the problem. The oil will also keep the gearbox cool, so it would be a very good idea to top it up as soon as you can.
