coolant light's come on twice in the last couple of days, can I top it up with water or do I need the same yellow liquid? (I'm assuming the coolant is the yellow fluid in the clear plastic ball thingymajig... )

The proper vx stuff is only about £2.50 is a ltr. If you keep topping up with water its going to dilute. Also with that ally head you have in your YH make sure if you go down the antifreeze rout get the proper stuff as 2.2 heads have been known to corrode due to the wrong type antifreeze.

I don't think there's a leak, I'll top up with the the real stuff as per rushy's post, and get it checked in the new year.

If the light has come on twice in the last few days and it's dropped coolant right down, then it's not good.. if the level hasn't moved down, then it's just the sender as a very good guess ( not unknown) ....for a cheap first fix, change the pressure cap
