I assume you mean coolant level
This is the first sign of a blown head gasket, sadly
Get the engine warm, then switch off and listen for bubling noises

Get a sniff test done at a garage and check for mayo under the oil filler cap
Now I need a turbo to keep up!

First, check if the oil level is not rising or if you a re getting some sort of milk shake look like coolant on the expansion bottle.

Check for any visilble leaks, if the sign keeps showing even without the need of coolant you have then a faulty coolant level sensor.
    HTH

    EDIT..
You might drop by at a dealer or independant garage so they make a pressure test....is what has to be done on this cases.

Right...What engine is it? manual or automatic gearbox?..

It could be something as simple as a failed pressurecap or it could be something far more serious..

how much water is it using, and how quickly?

sounds like he's put some 'radseal' into it....it's a short term fix..

it needs a pressure test on the cooling system to see where it's going, then a permanent fix..
