Eek My knob just came off!!!

My gear knob that is. It's felt like it's been coming loose for a couple of days now but today I went for reverse and off it comes. I've managed to get it back on by turning it ever so slightly and beating the **** out of it but now when i go for reverse it pops across to the right when engaged. I took all the surround off to see if theres anything obvious but can't see anything. When you put it in reverse it goes over a lip on the side but then slips off again. Do i just need to get the knob further onto the shaft to tighten up the spring or do i need to go to the stealers??

right, be careful here, as you can drive the knob on too far, then it's new gearstick time and they aint cheap..if the selector finger isn't down far enough to stay retained in the gate, then drive it down a bit further..TBH, if they come off, i normally glue them on again as well as tapping ( with a snapon soft faced hammer) them on tight...use your judgement.. does it seem that it needs to go further??? or is it too far??..if it's the stealers, then they will only replace the entire gearstick ..so whatever you can do at home first is best..just be careful to not go too far..

It seems as though it's not on enough. There is a white plastic part that i assume is the lift up reverse lock and it's as though it isn't sitting right and therefore slipping off. The knob itself seems to be on right but when it came off the shaft was fine but the thread seems to be bare hence it not gripping so i turned it just a fraction so it would bite and just thumped it as hard as i could at the time.

right, well is the spring correctly seated??..and does the reverse 'lift' on the shaft move correctly as i wonder if it's now rising too far?..

the lower end of the shaft wouldn't be affected by the knob coming off, it's just going to be one of a few simple things on the shaft..

if you can, pull the knob off again.. moving it round the splines will help it hold a bit but it may well let go again..have a look and make sure everything is properly aligned underneath the knob, then glue and tap it on...

before whacking it too hard, check that the reverse gate doesn't rise to high..
then give it a good belt....

How many springs are there?? I know of the one that goes under the knob but are there any others. The lift movement seems fine it locks in but if its touched it will slip off. I'll have a look tomorrow and see if it will come off again. When i put it back on it just looked like the spring dropped in so didn't notice if it had located correctly as i was in a rush to get it back on. Hows best to judge if the gate is in the right place

it's the big black spring that you need to worry about...the one under the knob..

how to judge...it should not ride on the lower plate, but should be held by the 'edges' of it..so if the 'finger' keeps popping over it, it needs to go a little lower..

It's a bit hard to explain, and as i've only got 2 auto's here i can't even go and get a picckiy of the gearchange under the gaiter to show you....

Right. Well when the sun comes back out i'll have to try and get it back off and double check it. If I'm still getting problems then i'll post some pics up of the offending parts and see if i can get any joy from there. Thinking about it now it does seem as though it's too high on the gate hence me thinking the spring needed tightening. I'll have to get a towel to cover it so i can hit it with a hammer as i don't have a soft mallet.
