Default Anyone got an old 478 motherboard to fit a Celeron D lying around?

    Hi,

Has anyone got a suitable mATX 478 motherboard gathering dust in a cupboard anywhere?.

Needs to be able to support an old Celeron D 2.66Mhz processor.

A friend of mine has given me his old system to repair and I've had no luck getting it to boot up, after a good bit of testing, I reckon its the motherboard that is goosed.

Its an HP Pavillion a708 desktop, and its mATX form factor.

Here's a link to the info on it.....

    System:-

    Mobo details:-

    http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/p...36507&lang=en&

If anyone has got anything suitable that I can use to try and get this rig up and running again, that would be great.

    Needs to be cheap though!!!.

    Cheers m8, appreciate it.

Just looking for something that will run a Celeron D as a "test rig" to troubleshoot this system a bit further before I give the fella the "good news".

At present, the PC boots up when it feels like it. At first I thought it was a PSU issue. Swapped that out for a new one I had lying spare and it wasn't that.

So thought it might be a heat issue. Removed CPU, cleaned up with akasa TIM Clean and applied fresh Arctic Silver 5 and reseated HSF. Still the same.

Turned my attention to the hard drive, recovered as much data off it as poss and attempted to run through the usual, CHKDSK /R etc.

    Still no dice.

Now the thing will boot up to the Windows XP splash screen and 5 seconds later, restart to either a boot loop or restart to a blank screen. Sometimes it doesn't even POST. No beeps, nada.

Really want to swap the mobo out to test the CPU etc, hence the reason I'm looking for an el cheapo one to test it with. Got 939, socket A, 775 mobo's lying around here spare, the only type I dont have is a 478.....DOH!!!!

If it's not posting properly I'd give some attention to the CMOS battery (might need a new one) and reset the CMOS by removing the jumpers for 10 mins. A BIOS upgrade would help to.

Tried that too m8. Reset CMOS with jumpers between pins 2-3 and also whipped the battery out and changed it for a brand new one.

This is why I'm thinking its a hardware failure as in the mobo.

    Slight alteration to initial post.

Just been talking to m8, and now I would be interested in any 478 mobo/CPU bundle if anyone has anything lying around. He wants to get this back up and running before Xmas, so I'm posting here and on my usual other haunts.

Failing that I'm going to jump into the eBay jungle and see whats there. He uses this as a second PC/download box so we are not looking for cutting edge stuff, just something comparable with what he had in there before.
