    Default Remaps or Rolling Road

With great interest I read the rolling road feature in Total Vauxhall this month, and for me it begs a couple of questions ... Are remaps a pile of cr@p , or is it the rolling roads, as I have always suspected !!

A pile of astras on the rollers, a few VXR`s at the top as you would expect, but the 1st & 3rd place went to unmapped cars while 4th & 5 th went to a vxrpc & tms mapped car ... Seems very strange .. So down to the rollers, or do remaps just give a more aggresive feel, giving you the illusion of more power ??

Also A famous so called tuner with his black Astra estate refused to let them publish his figures , must have not been quite as expected either then *lol*

What was the criteria for 'winning' ?? was it max power, acceleration times etc.

I always have a problem with RR with only one run, and also the difference between RRs can be huge.

Remappers may not just be going for max power / torque values

Often a question i have thought
i had a remap on my 2.0Astra Sri, it didnt feel any different after it was done if im honest, had a rolling road and the car was at the same torque and figures which it was when new.
So for me ill never have a remap again

Remaps on turbo cars (over standard) do give you more power

Rolling Roads are a lottery based on....
    - Type of Rollers and how they are set up
    - The Operator
    - Cooling abilities and air temperature

Results should not be just based on max figures, as the power delivery map is more important.

It can all be settled at Santa Pod .... I managed 15.523 second 1/4 mile which beats cars with 50 BHP more on the rollers.... figure that one (and I've just got a measly 185 BHP)

But...... one question I have is....... the older a car gets does it loose power through wear ??..... because if it does roughly how much?, that would explain some things.

Cars will lose power when they get older, but as they loosen up in increases, so exactly when they start to lose I dunno. My vxr certainly felt more powerful after the remap, but these Astras made me wonder. I have never used a rolling road as I never trusted them, too much calculations done for my liking .. The guys with the maps must have been gutted anyway *lol*

yes, clearly worn engines would produce less power.
Cam wear would reduce valve max opening
    loss of cooling ability
fuel system wear, esp injectors, may reduce atomisation of fuel and therefore slower / incomplete combustion
piston ring wear, may reduce compression due to blow-by
wear of valve surfaces may reduce compression
filter offering higher restriction may reduce air or fuel flow

    Hope these are pointers

Also, Nutrons car has around 40 BHP more than mine, but over a 1/4 mile it only equated to about 0.35 tenths of a second quicker.

So.... an extra 40 BHP doesnt give you a massive advantage when the cars weigh 1500+ KGs

You need at least 80-100 BHP more to start to see significant differences on the road.

I still think remaps are good though and worth the money for what you get.

I would always get my cars remapped at least from now on (especially if they are turbo charged).

Thats just daft to generalise and put all remaps in the same basket as the duff one you must have had... some of my previous cars have gained a hell of a lot of BHP & Torque after a remap... even a Granada cosworth i once had that could only be chipped via a plug in daughter board on the ecu, You could notice the difference of 25BHP straight away..

rolling roads dont tell the hole story

as spoons has said ,if the map is made right and all the power is in the right place high figure's are not needed

i would said that both mine and spoons car will be pulling well over the 250 blf at 2000rpm where most maps will be about 130 to 150 blf

the good side to this is we don't have to rev the nut's off the car to get all the power we are both at full power at about 2300 rpm and pulling away from cars with more power than we have,, its not untill we get to the 4200 to 4500 rpm the other car may have the power to beat us but still need to catch us up ""but we are a long way infront ""

so all in all you need you map to be be made where will use it most 2000rpm to 3500rpm is where you will use your power in a diesel where the petrol will be a littel higher in the revs

when people get into mine and spoons car there is a big shock to them how much power there is when you drive the cars

I have just uploaded my BSR PPC re-maps and they do make a massive difference.
