Replacing the CIM

Guys,

As mentioned earlier my car has had some odd problems. AFLs pointing the wrong way, Traction control light on, Powersteering light comes on every now and then. Anyway it seems that it could be the CIM like you mentioned as another guy here had the same issues. However this cost £410! to replace.

Is this easy to replace yourself? I'm way to skint

Mate have you checked the fault codes on the car? Might be isolated issues that will not be solved by a new CIM...

Its booked in VX wednesday, so they will look then.

Just want to be ready if they say its the CIM to say I will fit it myself?

I mean for the robbing b****** to look at it its costing me £96!

Important: Wheels must be located in the straight-ahead position

1. Detach steering wheel

2. Detach steering column panelling

3. Detach steering column electronics module
Note: Steering wheel lock must not be engaged, ignition key to position "I"
Note: Mark the installation position e.g. using a felt pen, so that the steering column electronics module has the same installation position after reinstallation.
Note: After removing, the shaft of the steering column electronics module must not be rotated.
• Release nut (1) for twist protector




4. Detach steering column electronics module
• Release bolt (1)




5. Detach steering column electronics module
• Release wiring harness plug (1)

• Disconnect wiring harness plug




6. Detach steering column module
• Release clip (1)

• Remove steering column module





Install

Important: Wheels must be located in the straight-ahead position. Steering column electronics module SHAFT must be in the centre position, arrows on the steering column module must coincide. Note label on the steering column module.

7. Install steering column electronics module
Note: Steering wheel lock must not be engaged, ignition key in position "I". Note the mark made previously.
• Insert steering column module

• Tighten anti-twist device bolt (1) 15 Nm




8. Install steering column electronics module
• Tighten bolt (1) 15 Nm




9. Connect wiring harness plug (1)
• Lock wiring harness plug




10. Attach steering column panelling

11. Attach steering wheel
• When replacing the control unit, program control unit with TECH 2 after installation.

As Rushy's post - it's not a huge job to DIY, but the part itself isn't cheap. The sticking point comes when you fit the new one - it needs a fair bit of Tech 2 to program it all.

VX quoted me £50 a tech 2 session if I fitted it myself. I imagine the first one was just to clear the codes, but that can be done by just taking the neg off for a bit, but you'd do that just to unplug your airbag. All my symptoms have gone now, so it must just have been a loose plug or something. If it starts again I'll check the plug and see if that helps, but its been 2 months now, and touch wood all has been fine.

and to add, the programming must be done on tech2..as vauxcom didn't used to cover it, but i haven't played with the new beta for it to see if it does now cover the CIM...

they will also need both keys at the time martyn, they need to reprogram them to the car...or, if you do it yourself i know that 'glynn' has swapped his CIM with a bit of board level surgery...

Crikey... surely it's much easier and less likely to go pear shaped if you just use a Tech 2...

Wow, Thanks for all the info and help. Reading through I may just get VX to do it and sell the kids.
