    Default Camera advice needed

I'm looking at getting a digital SLR and want some advice on which one to buy. I've been looking at
the canon eos400d and also the nikon d40/d40x, now the eos400 and the D40x are 10mp and the D40
is 6mp so would I notice a lot of difference in the image quality and are they worth the extra £100
    over the D40.

This would be my first DSLR so having no previous experience of either brand, which has the best
user interface, which is the easiest to use, etc, etc.

I know that there will be people that are loyal to one perticular brand and treat the other with the same
contempt as a ford mondeo but any advice is appreciated.

I have just ordered a 400d , after a lot of looking around and already having a canon film camera it seemed like the best choice, it gets good reviews as well, and with £50 cash back from canon the cost is taken down a good bit. I have ordered it with the kit lens as I got a good deal on it, but that is the only bit that gets negative comments. I will get a decent smaller lens for it as well later on after I have tried out the kit lens I would think ...

These are both good cameras for a first, I have the Canon and my son has the Nikon. The Canon suits me better as I have smaller hands than him, so get a hold of them both to see how they sit in your hands.

As above Pricey - first thing to do is go into a camera shop and pick them both up. You may feel that one instantly just feels better for you, or one doesn't, so enabling you to shorten the list.

The reviews over at www.dpreview.com might help too.

Cheers guys, went and had a play with them at jessops this aft.

Straight away I didn't like the feel of the canon and although there is a wider selection of lenses available at
the moment, I didn't want a camera that I didn't like holding. So, it was a toss up between the D40 and D40x
and after some advice from the bloke in the shop I decided to go for the D40 and get a 70-200mm lense aswell.
All in all it worked out at the same price as the D40x so i'm quite pleased with that.

Gonna have to go out tomorrow and give it a proper test.

I got the D40 and even the wife likes it - always complaining about my old F3. Always had Nikons so my speedlight etc fits as well which is a bonus

Pricey, You didn't buy it from Jessops on the spot did you?

You could have done an online collect in store and probably saved a packet or gone elsewhere. I never buy from Jessops in the high street now!
