    confused Over boost?

I own a 2.2 dti sri vectra. And since getting it 6 months ago the car drop's on power on small hills at low rev's. but as soon as its switched off and on again it goes fine. If i drop her a gear up the hills shes ok but in fifth the car die's and put up a spanner on the dash. i've replaced the pipes around the engine, turbo and vacum pump, but got a tech2 done and the guy says its over boosting and will not tell me what part i need, and that to leave it with him so he can fix it. But i wanted the garage i bought the car to do the work for me. Any ideas wot i need done? or part?

    Thanks Alan

did he tell you how he knows its over boost's

i bet he can see something you have missed that's why he telling you to leave it with him to fix,,

overboost sholdn't kill the power but a turbo pipe leaking will and put the spanner light on

pm nutron and he may have a quick fix to find out what up with the car

If you have over boost you would be pulling up hill's etc no probs and in 5th you would be no problems you would feel like you have more power...

I had the same problem in my old FIAT turbo diesel... One of the vacuum pipes going into the boost valve had a split in the end as you plug it into the valve, by cutting the end flush would cure the problem till it perished again.

You said you have replaced the vacuum pipes, just check to see if the end split.

My opinion is that the guy who said that you are over boosting has already found the problem and don't want to tell you as it's a quick fix. where as you getting him to fix it will cos you more...

You've definitely checked, or replaced, all the boost pipes? Split boost hose on the 2.0/2.2 DTi is a comon problem. Often the split is on the underside of the hose and not easily spotted. It sounds suspiciously like that. The split will cause a loss of pressure, so the car will momentarily try to boost more - causing more overboost than it should, hence the spanner light as the car detects the out of range readings.

yeah all the pipes were checked on thurs again. i thought it was just a pipe as everything else is new. How many boost pipes is there? Duncan i have the same idea as you the if the pipes have split the car will try to boost more. but i cant find any split. cars booked back in for tuesday again to the garage. Hope its sorted this time

It might drop into limp home mode if the boost went too high, I'm not sure how the ECU on the 2.0/2.2 DTIs would react to said. When I was pushing my turbo through manual tweeking the ecu would throw a fit at about 120mph in 5th, what ever revs that equates to. Can' think of a good reason for the boost to suddenly start going mental though, except a broken turbo... Have you checked the waste gate vacuum line and the vacuum pump itself?

It could be a number of things - split hoses, wastegate actuator sticking, wastegate itself i.e. the disc loose/come off as happened to me recently.

Good point Duncan a sticky waste gate would definatly do it, that's well worth looking at Durk.
