    Question U581 Fault Code Scanner

U581 OBDII Scanner - Anyone else got one of these? I received mine today, it works great telling me what RPM the motor is running at, speed, air flows, temps, except it constantly reads No Trouble Codes, even though my spanner light is on.

The trouble code reset works, spanner light goes out, but comes back on next restart. I've tried rescanning, everything, just doesn't pick up any fault codes, even when the spanner light is on.

According to the manual, the MIL indicator is the fault lamp as I know it, and even when this lamp is on, the scanner shows MIL off.

    Any ideas?

ADD: Car is a Vectra Estate, 2004 1.9 CDTi (120)

You're only scanning the ECM, which in this case, has no fault codes logged.

The 'spanner light' isn't the MIL indicator, the MIL indicator is in the bottom right hand corner of the dash.

There's a number of modules that can log faults that the U581 isn't capable of scanning... ABS, EHPS, etc. If one of them has a fault logged, then the spanner light will come on, but you won't be able to find out which one it is with the U581.

    Hope that makes sense.

Makes sense - I have a £80 paperweight... so I'll have to pay the Stealers in Bristol £65 for the honour of telling me what my fault is. Any scanners on the market that read these codes, or is it just the hi level software / laptop units that do this?

I don't think there's any of the low cost scanners that can read anything other than engine codes. The U581 is still quite handy though.

Looks like a trip to the stealers

Try googling for a canbus scanner, I've seen some units online somewhere that scan all the systems the same as the tech 2 does..

Vaux-com will scan everything, do actuator tests and do some programming too, but costs £500.

That auto-diagnostics one looks quite neat, though
