Default I never knew MOT's could be so much fun!!

Car went for MOT today, and what should have been a simple routine job, turned into the best part of 8 hours of nightmare's.....

Left the house at 9am this morning, Had to pop in to see my brother at his garage in Luton, to get the detail's for the place he had booked my car into, As its so low, and to avoid raising it up, we hunted out a garage with a ramp set into the floor so it wouldnt be a problem getting it up in the air..

On the way to his, i felt a rear brake dragging, so when i got there i pointed it out, he took it for a drive, but it seemed to have cured itself, so off i poodled for the MOT. Now, my brother has an incompetent bloke called Dean working for him in the office, I cant stand him, He is a pain in the arse. Well i was asked to run some errands for my brother whilst my car was being MOT's and with nothing better to do, i agreed. Dropped the car off, and off we went shoppng, Dean picking me up in his old shape MR2 pice of sh!t thing. We did what we needed to within half hour, so headed back to MOT station where i was going to sit and wait for it to be finished. Dean decied to take a short cut to the MOT station, and subsequently got lost, much to my amusement, and anger as it meant i had to spend more time than i needed to in his company! Pulling out of a side turn, the MR2 started lurching and juddering badly, and i instantly knew what ws wrong... "Dean, we have run out of Petrol havent we??" "No, It usually does 30mpg blah blah etc" he went on... With that my phone rings, its my brother telling me my car needs collecting as it's too low for the ramp, and the back brakes are stuck on solid! So here i am, sat in the middle of the worst estate in Luton, in a w*nky old MR2 which is out of fuel, needing to get to a Garage whichhave no idea where it is..... Great!!

I started walking, thinking i would be able to flag a Taxi down, why is it when you want a Taxi, none are about, yet whne you dont, they are every bl*ody where!! I eventually flagged one down, and it was about 4 miles to the MOT place, I didnt care of the cost, i woud have happily paid £20 at that moment in time, I think it cost about £6, TBH i wasnt really paying attention when i handed him my money!

The guy who runs the MOT station told me when he had yanked the Handbrake up to do the test on it, it hadnt released, and now was stuck solid.. He wasnt wrong, the car would barely move! What had he done!! After a bit off tooing and froing, i manged to get the handbrake to release, and poking screwdriver thru the spokes in the whels, managed to knock it off a bit more, but it was none to clever, and was still draggng very badly!

So, of i sets back to my brothers to sort this out, with the one positive thing, the guy hadnt charged me for the MOT that wasnt! It was very evident that the brakes were bad, as there was smoke visibly coming from the back wheels, luckily it was p*ssing down, so i kept diving into puddles at the rodside to keep the brakes and wheels cool. Back at the workshop, we had the wheels off, dismantled the rear brakes, brushed them out, checked the caliper's were functioning properly, and boxed them back up, still none the wiser. It had only been 4 weeks since we fitted rear pads to it, and they had been fine til this morning. We tried them, they were still sticking badly, so we took them apart, looked, poked prodded, got another set of rear pads(Not genuine ones i add), tried again and still the same problem... WHich is when one of my brothers Mechanic's piped up... "Are you using Genuine Pads"...... "No"... "Well n that cae i know what the problem is...." It turns out, that the pads wee have fitted have lugs on one pad that are the exact same size and width apart as the holes in the caliper pistion for the rewind tool. When i fitted them 4 weeks ago, i just assumed they were supposed to go in there, but they are not! There other oad also has 2 lugs on it, which fit in a different place on the outside of the piston, So, with this new found knowlege, i plough on, and 45 minuts later, its all sorted!

Now its time for raising the car up a lttle bit, which to be fair was a doddle, and an hur later its ready for MOT again, but every where is fuill, and the guy who did it this morning, cant do a retest til next week!! We phoned everywhere and got on every waiting list for a test today.. Eventually at 1415 today, someone phones and says bring it down now and it can be done. It just so happens its the Test Station with the steepest ramp and approach in Luton, but it needs doing.. Luckily we had just raised it enough, the rubber lip scraped the floor and the ramp on the way in, but it was enough!

The guy tried telling us the handbrake was weak, as when he yanked it up the wheels stil turned, but he was catchig his elbow on the arm rest, once he altered his yanking style, the back wheels rode out of the rollers and it passed with flying colours!!

So all in all a very stressful day, but its done and over with for another year!

But it passed, thats the main thing, and i know for next year, it needs to be raised at least 15 turns of the platform to get on an MOT ramp!
