Thumbs down Trouble on start up

This is the second time in 3 weeks that the beast wont start at the first attempt. Outside temp. no cold at all (17 c`s) first and second attemp the engine starts but after 1 second the revs drop down and stops....third attempt of start up you can feel the revs playing up and down a little and after 3 secs the revs normalizes.
Any ideas what can be causing this? I would like to solve this before it gets worst...

Could it be the Air contol valve on the side of the throttle body, have you tried spraying Carb cleaner down the top of the throttle body and into the hole in the inside where the air control valve is, or remove the air control valve and give it a good clean with carb cleaner.

Thanks Ed for the reply If I`m not mistaking you mean the metal body with a round flap just right out the air box right? If that is the case I looked at it 2 months ago and it was clean as new. I`ll check it again to start eliminating options.
    Cheers

I'd start with the obvious and get it plugged into a diagnostics machine and see if any fault codes come up.

You will not get any fault codes unless your EML light has been on.

I would not bother with any carb cleaner, after all it is really designed for what it says on the tin and will do little for a throttle body.

Throttle bodies can be cleaned, but dont undo the screws that hold the butterfly valve in place or that can lead to all sorts of trouble. I personally wouldnt bother with the throttle body.

I have the same problem and managed to get an almost new throttle body, and whilst it drives much smoother, it still starts badly.

Mine does start very well when cold, first thing, but no so well when warm ish!

Once started its perfect, idles perfect, etc.

Air mass meter, possible??? Why no EML though!

On the wifes Vecra B she had problems with the air control valve, and by cleaning the valve via the little hole in the inside of the throttle body, it cured the iratic tick over, but in the end I had to fit a new air control valve as the return spring had lost some of it,s tension so the valve was never in the right place when it should have been, But the air mass meter is also a posibility.
