    Default Ford Focus Cambelt Problems..

My mum has got a 51 plate Focus 1.8 TDDi Estate, and today going thru Dunstable the engine just died on her..

No worries, she turned the key to fire it up and it made the most horrific sounds, so she called my brother who came out in his wrecker to tow it back to his workshop and have a look at it..

Turns out the Cambelt has sheared the teeth, the belt was changed about 5000 miles ago(3-4 months i think) and after stripping the car out, found that it had sheared the teeth of the belt! Now it was my Brother's garage who fitted the belt too, so we know it was fitted properly, and had the tensioner replaced as a precaution

Now, the belt is not a genuine FMC belt, its a Unipart belt sold thru a Large Nationwide Motor Factor who my brother does a hell of a lot of buniness with..(Not gonna name them just yet, incase they read the Forum's, even though it is a Ford)

The engine is locked solid at the moment, and wont turn, so until it gets stripped ut tomorrow we wont know the full extent of the internal damage, but we assume that its bent all 8 valves maye damaged a piston or 2 in the process.

Now, what are the chances of getting ************** Motor Factors to pay for the damage to the engine??

I doubt that you will have any chance at all they will say it was not fitted correctly or some other excuse to get out of it. You might find that one or more of the valve guides are "knackered" too, it will quite an expensive repair i,m affraid.

Well first of all I'd say that it wouldn't be the factors you could even claim against, it would be the makers of the belt - Unipart.

To do that, I think you'd have to conclusively prove that the belt was defective - and that's what may be the difficult thing to do.

Sorry, i did mean Unipart, but ********* Motor Factor's are the first point of contact as they were who it was sold through.

Sure though Duncan, a belt that shear's all but a handful of teeth off the entire length of the belt is evidence enough isnt it...

I will get some photo's of the belt on Thursday so you can see how bad it is.

It certainly doesn't look good - but it all depends if they say it was due to something else I guess. Is it feasible that something jammed (due to another fault) but another part was still able to turn therefore causing the belt to still try and turn and strip the teeth?

I know where Duncan is going with this as my Cav did a similar thing when the water pump ceased up

At the moment, anything is possible. Will know the full SP tomorrow when the engine comes out and gets stripped down, I just wondered if anyone here had been in the same boat and had a succesful outcome in this sort of thing.

Don't those engines drop valves the odd time? That'd **** a belt pretty quick.
