Default One For Duncan, And anyone else

Here goes, I'm looking for a digital camera that can shoot a good picture in the dark, and I mean one that lights things up properly, not one that just picks out anything illuminated, I want it to be a compact and cost no more than £200 max, anyone know?

I've got the Fuji F30 which is pretty good (although old now), the F40fd looks good for the price. Clicky

It's not so much the camera that does that VV, it's the settings the user makes. A number have night settings, which basically puts the camera into a long exposure mode (so you'll need a tripod), but even then some user intervention/over ride will probably be necessary. What I'm getting at is, don't expect a camera, especially in that price range, to take a night pic exactly how you want it by just pointing and shooting.

You're not going to great quality at that price either - in terms of night shooting. The one thing that you'll see on long exposures on cheaper cameras is greatly increased noise - the sensors are cheaper and not really up to the job basically. I think you may be disappointed with the results.

Not sure what to suggest. I can't suggest any particular models as I've never used that range of camera to shoot at night. Hopefully somebody who has can comment on their results etc.

Don`t know any camara (point and shot type) that can take good pics indoors or at night....the best choise IMO is one that can have an external flash attached to it...but Duncan will have a final word on that matter...he is the expert

I have one of these and cannot recommend it highly enough. A fantastic bit of kit.

My picture wasnt just in jest. You can do that and take effective, nay excellent night pics. Although that is a Nikon, Canon cameras may not produce as good results .

My recommendation would be a good second hand camera like a Canon (spit) G5 and an external flash. You should be able to get that for £200. Then again you could get a basic older DSLR for that money too.

The G5 is certainly a good option as well.

How are those two - the Canon and Nikon you mentioned - for noise on long exposures though? I thought most of that type of camera weren't great - due to the small sensors etc.

My camera is a Pentax Optio A30...

about £150, 10MP and takes pics more than good enough for what I want. Has a selection of might modes, and will choose the correct one automatically if you want it to....shake reduction, face recognition, soft flash etc.
