For years Junction 8/9 of the M56 has been a bit of a bottleneck with traffic from the M56 from Chester being joined by traffic coming from the south on the M6 via the A556. The problem was that Traffic on the M56 would move to Lanes 2 and 3 to let traffic from the A556 join causing tailbacks in lanes 2 and 3. At the same time people joining the motorway had to get into lane 3 at all costs within 10 seconds of joining, causing all sorts of chaos. My solution was to get through before 7:30 to avoid the crush. That mans leaving at 6 am every day.
A few months back the highway planners obviously had a session on the old Wacky Backy. The junction was re-jigged so that lane 1 peals off reducing the M56 to 2 lanes…Lane 1 of the sliproad joining becomes Lane 1 of the M56 after the junction with Lane 2 of the sliproad filtering into lane 2 of the M56.
Its worth noting that 0.05% of the traffic passing through that junction (eastbound) actually peel off using lane 1.
Everything on the M56 bottlenecks miles before the junction. lane 1 is empty for 1.5 miles and people joining the M56 still have to get out into lane 3 ASAP causing chaos as traffic on the M56 drops anchor. So now I have to get through even earlier and that still causes minor snags.
This morning I was a “little” late leaving…The bottle neck was back to the M6 (5-8miles) Why? Because of the 750m two lane stretch. Nothing and I mean Nothing was joining the M56 at the junction but there were still miles of tailbacks.
For the first time in 5 years I was late for work…..Thanks Mr Planner who ever you are you've really stuffed up here!….I can’t wait to get back on site and away from this daily commute!
