Default Vectra 2.0 cdx wonít start?

    Hello everyone
Iv just bought a Vectra 2.0 cdx from a mate and Iím having a problem getting it started when cold. I know that one of the glow plugs is not working and iv ordered 4 new oneís but could one really stop it from starting. I have had a meter on cap of glow plugs and Iím getting 12 volts to everyone for about 20 seconds so I know Iím all right with power getting to them. This morning I tried to start it and eventually ended up with flat battery. When I put jump leads on I must have been turning engine over for at least 2 min before it eventually started. Once its started and got warm then it starts first time until I leave it until it gets cold again then back to square one again.
So if I have one glow plug down will it stop the car starting or could it be something else I need to look at.

    Regards
    Alan

This is a Vec 'B' i take it?.. If so then depending upon the weather one glow plug can hamper it from starting properly, but wouldnt be enough to stop it starting altogether. I'm suspecting a fuel drainback problem whereby your needing to crank it over for a cpl of mins when left for a long period, like say overnight...

Get the glowplug changed first then shout out again if you've still got problems.

    2.0 CDX?

Doesn't that make it a Vectra B? You might get lucky if someone here used to have one, but you will probably have more luck over on VVOC

If its a 2.0DTi its most likely the fuel leak off pipes (had to have mine replaced when I had starting problems with my old B). If I remember correctly if they have split it drops the pressure in the fuel system hence the problems. Fortunately its cheap to fix, just remember to replace the Y-pieces as well as they can perish.

Thanks very much everyone I have glow plugs on order collecting tomorrow and will fit straight away. If the car was petrol I would suspect a fuel problem as to the way it dose eventually start I have to pump like mad on accelerator. I will have to get the car on the ramps to check diesel pipes.

Pumping on the throttle won't help it start as the 2.0DTi is drive-by-wire so it will ignore the requests.

Sounds like you're doing the right thing with changing the glowplugs due to the results you've already had, but I'm 99% certain it will be the leak off pipes. You'll find plenty of threads on VVOC about it.

    Default Glow Plugs

Just changed all 4 glow plugs as none of them was working when I checked after removing. When I checked 12v supply before removing I had volts for about 20 seconds on each plug but my dash board indicator goes out after about 5 seconds. Is there a thermostat that cuts supply to the glow plugs when there hot or dose it keep glowing for the full 20 seconds. My only other diesel vehicle was a company van and indicator on dash used to stay lit for about 10-15 seconds but as soon as it went out the van was ready to start. Do I try and start after indicator goes out or do I leave it longer.
    Regards

I had to have the glow plug timing circuit replaced on mine.....it's a separate unit - maybe worth a try?

The power does keep on after the light goes out, this aids it in the cold starting and cold running and is quiet normal, I've heard that they can be on as long as 2mins. 20secs sounds perfectly fine. When the plugs go out on my 'B' i normally wait a cpl of seconds afterwards before cranking it over.
