That's a b*stard mate. I noticed about a dozen chips on my windscreen this morning. I hope they don't turn into cracks

Strange the window shatering like that. Maybe a bit of grit jamed between the glass and the bottom edge casueing a presure point.

TAM get it done on the insurance for free. Hopefully your fully comp.

TAM - As a windscreen fitter for RAC, the stone chips you can get done for free through your insurance with no affect to your no claims or policy. Just give them a call, and they'll put you through (or do the arrangment for you) with which ever company they prefer (either RAC or Autoglass).

Robinhood66 - Thats a pain! I replace a lot of back windows that just 'shatter' for no reason. Some the car isn't even touched. Can be a number of reasons, as said, a bit of grit or something just caught the edge enough for the movement of the tailgate to shock it. It could even be air pressure within the vehicle, though you said it happend when you opened it so I'd rule that one out.

As above, you insurance will sort it for you, just need to pay your glass excess, and again, will not affect your policy or no claims.

I had a repair done a few years ago on my astra windscreen. After it was done I wished I had broken it and had a new windscreen fitted. I dont know if the well know company made an **** of it but I could always see the repair in the glass. It drew my attention to it all of the time, a real pain it was. If you get yours repaired I hope it gets done right.
