    Default exhaust help

I have a standard 1.8, it had a single exit standard sri exhaust on.

I think the bore of the system was about 45-47mm.

I bought a dual exit sri exhaust from someone on the site, this was the middle section and 2 back boxes. The bore of this was approx 55-60mm.

A garage has fitted it for me, by removing my middle section, welding in a stepped up piece to the front pipe and fitted the new centre and back boxes.

This gives me no centre box, just a straight through pipe and two back boxes.

Since fitting only yesterday - the car sounds really rough. It has a really tinny sound to it - like a fiesta tryin to be a scooby.

The engine fault light has also come on!

    HELP HELP HELP

    any ideas

    a) how to make it quiet again, whilst still having 2 boxes
    b) why fault light is on

    Thanks

it could be a couple of things.

    1. did any of the pipes of the garage removed have any sensors plugged in? if so did they refit them or make sure they are plugged back together properly. It sounds like limp home mode to me as the ECU is missing the vital exhaust lamda sensor feedback.

    2. The back pressure has dropped to the point where the exhaust gases in the cylinders are staying put and not been drawn out. I had this happen on an old mk3 cav when the manifold had a nice crack in it near to the flexible joint.

Personally I would take itback to the garage, get it up on the ramps and have a damn good look with the fitter to make sure all sensors are where they should be and are connected properly. The larger bore back boxes will make diddly squat difference to the back pressure, but the missing centre box might. Again though I would doubt it would make that much difference.

The tinny sound will go after a while as the new pipes coke up - it always takes a few miles to get rid of that "new exhaust" sound.

they are all second hand pipes, so not new.

No sensors were moved as they are located near the cat in the engine bay?

I was thinking of getting the centre changed for a powerflow one?

There should be three sensors in total, well on mine there are. A lamda sensor before the cat, along with an exhaust gas temp sensor. Then there is a second lamda after the cat. You sure they haven't removed the second lamda? I'll just double check that your engine has two lamdas. Back in a tick.

no, nothing was touched before the centre box.

Just old centre box removed and new one welded in place?

In that case they wouldn't, as you say, have removed any sensor. The second lamda is on the pipe before the centre section.

Have they maybe been a bit rough with the pipe and caused damage to the lamda? Does the fault light come on the instant you start the engine?

I'd put my money on a sensor issue then due to it coming on straight away. As all you've changed, exhaust wise, is after any sensors it's not going to have affected what's being detected by them. I'd have a look at the second lamda sensor to see if it's had any obvious sign of having had a smack and check the wires. I'd also check that it's properly connected up in the engine bay as well

As above sounds like a sensor is missing....I also was thinking about reseting the ECUs
