Default AndrewTi's annual heat help thread!

Hi All, I've broken it again.....

Right basically I know f*** all about heating systems.

I've got a boiler, no problems there. I have a housefull of radiators.

Now, this heating system has a big red tank in the heating cupboard, that is fed water via a valve, via a pressure guage.

The valve is normally open. This feeds the tank, which in turn gives pressure for a) the heating to work and b) the hot water to be fed to the taps.

Since yesterday however, the pressure valve has been going ape****, blowing all the pressure out. Also the overflow from that circuit has been running.

Thing is, I don't know why? I can maintain the heat and hot water by occasionally turning the valve to feed the pressure, and knocking it off just before it hits 3 bar, but it loses pressure and means the heating goes off and the hot water isn't fed through.

Any Ideas what's going on? I've bled the radiators and had to replace a rad valve, due to a leaking rad, so I could isolate it till the weekend when I can sort it properly, but still, if I leave the tap on, it'll send the pressure valve off again!

Hopefully someone who knows what I'm talikng about has read this and understood it!!

    Help!

Newsflash; Reading has been hit by severe snowstorms, the like of which haven't been seen since 1956. Approximately 5 inches fell in half an hour, causing widespread disruption, and what can only be described as a loud 'D'oh' to eminate from the Calcot area......

Sounds like the pressure release valve has become blocked with crud & can't close properly.

It is a red knob somewhere (usually has pressure rating written on, eg 3 bar), which will turn against a spring, spurting water out of the overflow. The water pushing against the spring is how it works.

If you can find it, try jetting some water out by opening it briefly then snapping it closed. Also try tapping it with a screwdriver handle or the like when closed. Both should help the valve seat properly.

If this fails a new valve is needed, (if that is what the problem is).

Overfilling can cause this, dont fill it too much as the valve weeps a bit when close to it's release rating, allowing the cr@p to block it's seal so it can't close again.

You shouldn't run it much more than 1.5BAR for a start. Normally that red tank only needs filled when there's a leak, then the water supply turned off.

You get a few different types of pressure release valve, when I say different I mean the connections to it.

I had to change mine last year and I picked up the wrong one, managed to get it to fit though.

It will set you back about 6 - 7 quid
