    Default Astra VXR: Tested

Well itís a Vauxhall and itís a VXR so I guess you all may be a little interested
Iíve got an Astra VXR to runabout in for the next 3 days. Itís a month old and only done 300 miles so not exactly run in
    Still must test it nonetheless!

First time I drove it I didnít think it was as fast as I thought it would be. I think the problem is, is that Iím too used to my diesel and expecting it to fly at around 2000-2500rpm. I forgot it was a petrol and needs to be revved . Once mastering how to drive a petrol again and give it some revs it certainly went well. It doesnít exactly throw you back hard into the seat, but very rapid when revved. Although my 3.0 is no where near as fast as the Astra you still get a good dollop of torque in mine at 2500rpm and it pulls well Ė this is what Iím used to.
In the Astra you overtake cars effortlessly and literarily leave them for dead. Its quite unreal the speeds you can get to in a short space of time. The sport button is useful if you want to use a little more fuel Ė its sharpens up the throttle response and steering a bit I think.
As for the handling, well this really is sooooo much better than what Iím used to. It certainly handles like its on rails. You can go round corners and bends at a phenomenal rate - the kids love it!
It was funny earlier I was following this 57 reg Golf R32 thing out of town. We got to a dual carriageway and he floored it. Well, no trouble keeping up with him and he eventually pulled over and let me pass to have a nosey at WTF kept up with him

Also did some timings (well I had to!)
I did this based on the timings in Spoons 30-70 thread

    30-50 (2nd) 2.5s
    30-50 (3rd) 3.1s
    50-70 (3rd) 3.4s
    50-70 (4th) 5.0s
    50-70 (5th) 5.4s
    30-70 (though gears) 5.8s

These are only rough and did them with a stopwatch. But donít forget the car has only done 300 miles so I think these times would improve quite a bit once its run in and loosened up.
Taking it round the lanes today I reset the fuel computer and I think driving it normally I think would easily see well over 30mpg. But ragging it looks like you'd get 25ish.

I main problem for me in this car is the headroom. I'm only 5'11'' and I can barely get my hand between the top of my head and the roof so my hair is rubbing the roof a bit which I dont like much.

The keyless doors and ignition is quite cool. You just walk up to the locked drivers door and providing the key is in your pocket just open the door (automatically unlocks) and jump in then press the button to start and drive off. Theres no where to put a key into the dash.

This is interesting to compare the Vec VXR I driven a few weeks ago. Now I only driven the Vec for about 20 mins with a salesman, the missus and 2 kids in the car but was still very impressed with the Vec. Maybe I'm getting old lol but I really did like the Vec. I think its still probably as quick as the Astra although I dont suppose its quite as sharp on the handling but still a great car, if a little heavy on fuel.

    Sorry the pics arent great........

I was expecting the missus not to like it as we looked at one in a garage a few weeks ago and she didnt like the size at all inside. But when we went out in it today I think she changed her mind . Although she still only said it would only make a good 2nd car for us (having a family and that). So that rules that out then as I cant afford 2 cars on finance

After having my Astra for just 2 days, it handles and drives so much better than the Vectra.

Of course the Astra will be more chuckable, but my biggest fear about the Astra is how it would handle the crap roads in the UK. The Signum/Vectra with 19" wheels is so much more crashy on the suspension than the Astra.

So all in all, well pleased with the deceision.
