    Default On Board Computer Problems.....

    Hi all,

The Signum's On Board Computer has been playing up something chronic in the last week or so.
Everytime i start it from cold, or nearly cold, it says "Check Right Brakelight" or "Check Left Brakelight" The light warning also comes on on the dashboard too. Having replaced both stop light and taillight bulbs at the same time (using my ET fingers to undo the bolts), there is definitely nothing wrong with ANY of the bulbs. It keeps happening on and on and on and you get the picture.
Anyways, after another week of it doing it I was pretty pi**ed off with it so I took it to Lookers in Birkenhead. They were unable to diagnose any faults and gave the car back within an hour.
5 minutes driving later, yes you guessed it, the warning light and message was back witha vengence.
I turned the car off, then on again and the message didn't come back. I then phoned Lookers straight back and told them what was going on. They told me that turning the ignition off wipes the fault from the memory and unless it replicates itself with the dealer then there is naff all they will do.
Is the guff about the fault memory wiping correct? This problem is doing my haed in - any ideas?

Also, has anyone else had issues with the Vectra / Signum handbrake. Mine released itself the other day and it rolled back into a brick wall. Again Lookers 'can't fault the car'

    ARRRRGGGGHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!

On the light warning issue is probably caused by poor electrical contact of the bulb/holder or the electrical plugs.

I have checked all the contacts, even gone as far as cleaning them with cotton rags to clean any cack off them. trust me, the contacts are as clean as a whistle.

    Anyone got any other thoughts?

I've had mixed experiences at that Lookers dealership, they are a bit too quick in fobbing you off. Might be worth trying somewhere else like Heswall, Wallasey or Ellesmere Port ??

Are you sure you changed the right lamps? Not being funny but the vec/siggly will use other lamps in their place if one or both go pop.

You really didn't know about the handbrake issue? Its been on watchdog and everything
Now I need a turbo to keep up!

Instead of cotton rag, have you tried a little bit of emery paper/wet and dry to clean up the contacts?

Also, have you tried a couple of new bulbs? Often this symptom is an indication of the bulbs about to go/failing (the filaments). For a couple of bulbs it's worth a go. I had the same on one of my bulbs (brake light too). Kept popping up with a warning, cleaned the contacts did nothing. Looked at the contact on the bulb and it was smaller than the other bulbs, like it had worn. Replaced bulb and voila!, no more bulb warning message.

Changed both stop lights and both tail lights - 4 in all. Just sick of being foobed off by each and every dealer I go to.
Any preference in bulbs that I should be using?? Halfrauds etc etc?
Knew about handbrake, just couldnt get the car into gear before the handbrake dropped, and being tired I didnt jump on the brake pedal quick enough - the wall was only a couple of feet behind me (luckily)

I had the exact problem with the bulb warning last week. Turned out the element in two of the bulbs had broke but had just moved a little, looked fine but was intermittently failing. In the process to solve he problem I took out the hole unit, cleaned all contacts and also the contacts on the male /female connector to the loom. Any way after doing all that and changing all bulbs except reverse and indicators all has been fine.

My tail light bulb keeps going. The warning came on so I put a brand new bulb in and the next day i got the warning again, so put a different one in, and it happened again the next day. Note ive got an estate, its the tail light on the passenger side (not the one on the tailgate). I used bosch bulbs. Its a bit of a pain replacing that light as well as you have to disconnect the whole unit (3 thumb screws, disconnect wiring, remove the light, then theres 3 more normal screws holding in the bulb holder)

One thing i did notice though was when i closed the boot, the tailgate light on the same side went out for a few secs then came back on really dimly, then got brighter after a few seconds.
