Default v or w speed rating

Need two new front tyres soon and decided to stick to standard Good Year Eagles 215/50/17. I have noticed that the factory tyres are W rated (up to 168 mph) but I can get hold of V rated ones (149 mph) much easier. I there a reason why Vx fit the w rated?? Is it to do with heavier Diesel lump in the front (1.9)?? Surely V rated ones will be ok?? Will they???

there is another number too ! it should be in the ninetys ! ie 91 ! this is the load rating of the tyre ! you need to match this number or go above it , as long as its V rated or above and the coorrect load rating you should have no issues mate !

Which one are your current tyres :
    215/50R17 91V
    215/50R17 95W XL

If you have a 3.0 petrol or 3.0 V6 CDTI then recommend you stay with XL tyres rated at 95W

You can quite easily swap to the 225/45R17 on either 91W or 94Y XL

My current tyres are Good Year Eagle NCT 5 215/50/R17 91 W. There is no sign of any extra load carry on

I wouldn't go for a lower speed / load rating, find 91W or higher

I have seen some brand new V rated ones on ebay with load bearing of 91 which is the same as i have now,the only difference being the actual speed rating. V speed rated are good for up to approx 148 mph off the top of me head. i know our lass flees about but not that fast ( I hope anyway!!!)

If the specified original equipment is W then you should stay with that rating or higher. It's just possible you could run into problems with insurance if you were to have a lower spec tyre and something happenned - especially if it involved the tyres or wheels.

Surely you should go by the top speed of the car as opposed to what is on it at the moment...?
