Default Sport Buttons, What Do They Do?

Contemplating chopping the Vectra in for a Zafira as it's not really coping as a family car and drinks fuel so it does need to go eventually
Anyway wanting to stick to a sportier model have been looking at all sorts but liking the SRI which has a sport switch to stiffen up the suspension. Am I realy going to use this is what I keep asking myself realy
From a maintenance point of view how does it work, does it use a different shock for this feature to a standard car, will one be extortionately expensive to replace just to support this feature which won't be used I'd of thought.

Its supposed to sharpen up the throttle as well, but I think your right on the cost of possibly replacing the shocks at a later date..... But then, when was the last time you replaced a set? in my experiance, not very often. In the astra sri I test drove, all the sport button did was light up! I notoced no difference in it at all!
Now I need a turbo to keep up!

The sports button can do a few things depending on the spec of the car - sharpen throttle response, sharpen the steering, stiffen up the suspension and switch to different map to up the power. Not all cars with a sports button have all four features.

To stiffen up the suspension you'd need to have the shocks that can be stiffened up from the control of the ECU - and they are significantly more expensive that standard ones. IIRC I heard something like £400 a pop being mentioned!

The missus Astra has the sports button and there is definiatly a difference with it activated.

The steering is more direct and the throttle is kinda on/off if that makes any sence.

Not felt any difference in the ride quality though. The standard ride is pretty firm anyway. Especially compared to my Vec.

Edit. Just seen Duncans post. Her car probably hasn't got fancy shocks.

my bro in law has the astra sri and also sport button, small fifference when pressed and slightly noticeable.
If the Sports button gives more power better responce, then surely Vauxhall would mention thatin the sale of the product,
IE the sri cdti 150 is 150 without the sports button pressed and higher with.
My idea was that it runs lower than 150 until the button is pressed and then raises to 150
    just my Ideas

As I said, not all cars with the sports button have the two different power settings. e.g. on the Vectra what it does is sharpen up the throttle response - basically makes it more sensitive so that the same amount of travel on the pedal gives more revs than with the button out.

I know the sales brochure does say about the ride being stiffened up.
    £400 / shock, that's scary
I did hear Clarkson going on about the shocks on the R8 I think it was saying they have iron filings in the fluid and when voltage gets put through, the filings get magnatised and bond together meaning there's less room for the fluid to move.
I'd expect to pay £400 for a shock on one of them but not a Vauxhall.

I'd rather spend the £400 on a full setup from Eibach, Irmscher etc, and have the superior handling all the time TBH.

I often drive the Zafira's as hire vehicles and can agree with the above, they make NO BLOOMIN DIFFERENCE its a gimmic. OK it might stiffen the suspension (doubtful) but would you notice? the ever changing road surfaces in the UK would negate it. Go and take a test drive, trust me if your looking for a turbo like difference then forget it, it isn't noticable unless you want to (imagine it) notice it.

Me and a friend were driving from Inverness to Kinloss everyday for 2 weeks in one and we had the sport button, EITHER of us driving the other pressing THE button NO DIFFERENCE, both of us. Dont spend any extra on it.
