confused Help! CDTi Cuts out constantly

    Help!
Washed my car this afternoon and now it won't run for more than 3-4 seconds...
Got the spanner warning light on with the switch ignition on, and the engine light on permanently.

    Any ideas?

Had a quick look and no obvious loose connections or water anywhere.

The manual says water in the diesel filter would cause the light to come on but i don't see how the water could get in from just washing the car - though i did resort to chucking a bucket of water on the bonnet at one point. (where is the filter by the way?)

Really worried i could have a huge bill looming for new ECU, looms...

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

i see your car is a 2004 model, what month cos it is covered by manufacturers warranty for 3 yr's, even if the warranty is just out i am sure that vx will pay most of the cost of repair if not all of it.....

as for throwing water on the bonnet and the car being faulty that i am sure is just coincedence, a call into the dealers or the AA / RAC will be the first thing i would do so you can try to get it sorted...

    good luck with this mate

Oh bo110cks, looks like the immobiliser chip has dropped out of the ignition key... And i don't have a spare!!!

Just dropped off the car with a garage, who are also going to order a spare key. Hopefully get a newer flip type as it's kinder on the pocket lining.

The flip design is all thats available now. It will be anywhere between £60 and £120 for a new key, for some reason the price varies somewhat between dealers

    Angry

    ****, ****, ****........

New key but still no joy. The garage have run a Tech 2 and come up with 10 fault codes, 2 of which are 'present', the other 8 'not present'. Managed to clear all the fault codes after disconnecting the battery, but the ten (2 present, 8 not present) return.

The fault codes include 'replace ECU' and some 'injector high' (i think!) as well as an engine speed, position or valve fault. Sorry, should have written them down but i'd just cycled 5 miles down a busy A road and was still just glad to be alive

Mechanic had a look around the engine and there are a fews cables adrift from where they should be clipped. Also, the large loom behind the engine has been taped up with black electrical tape. There is also another section to the right of the engine, between the battery box and engine, where a loom has been taped up. Looks like somewhere down the line there has been a bodged repair.

There appeard to be a nice new shiny silver part on the bottom left hand side of the engine, sticking out towards the back of the car - about 100mm wide and 60mm deep. Any ideas what this is?

Where exactly does the ECU sit? I'm wondering if i could have splashed it with water last week and fried it.

Just soooo p1$$ed of at the moment. Need to drive down to Brum on Monday, then onto London, and i can see this taking days - or even weeks to fix. Oh yes, not to mention a shed load of cash, what with the car being a whole 8 weeks out of warranty.....

If anyone has ever come across anything like this before i would really, really appreciate some pointers.

    Thanks!

    James
