    confused 1.8 won't heat up - Bl**dy freezing!

My father has a 1.8 and it won't heat up!

It just never worked when he got in it this morning.

I have read a fair bit about it on forums and need a help as to where to start.

Is the thermostat stuck closed? How do i test it?

Is the Heater Matrix blocked? How do i diagnose this?

Is the linkage from the controller disconnected some how? Where is it?

I am not sure where to start, how to start or if it could be something else.

He uses the car for work and i fear his feet will freeze before it's fixed.

Many thanks for reading this and i am grateful for any advice

I had a sierra (yes I know..sorry!) with the same problem.
Whatever I looked at it wasnt it.
In the end I took it to the garage, they sorted it in a morning, turned out heater matrix was knackered!

sound's like the stat to me mate, but couldn't tell you where it is so you can get it out to test, if you know i used to boil the kettle and drop it in if it opened then it was ok if not it was foooooooked, best idea is to go to the dealer's and get it sorted

Does the temp gauge show any temp or does it just sit a zero? If gauge shows a very low temp I would change the thermostat (front left side of head - two water connections and one temp sensor wiring connector to remove). Funny old thermo' with two lugs that have to be located under lugs in the casting but no prob as tool is supplied with thermo to ease fitting.

silly question, but is the radiator in good condition?

if it is busted or low in fluid, the hot liquid wont reach the higher part of the engine, so the air intake wont get heated. i had that problem in my honda a few weeks back. just tossed the radiator and got a new one.

if this is the case, i'd recommend bleeding pout the radiatior in full and filling with anti freeze, it is winter after all!

to empty the radiator, just unscres the little plug at the botom and leave to drain.

then tighten that back up and open the bleed nipple at the top of the hose coming from the radiatior and fill with antifreeze. this can tke a while so be patient, as the air needs to clear from the system completely, or your back at the start. just keep filling til fluid is running from th nipple. (stop laughing at the back)
