Default Should we arm our Police Forces???

Simple Poll this one - yes, no or not decided.

Following on from the murders in Bradford - As above! Do you think our Police Forces should be armed to help protect law abiding members of our society, or do you think all it would achieve is to make criminals arm themselves.

    Your views please -

As an ex Firearms Officer...absolutely not. I wouldn't trust some of my 'colleagues' to wield a jelly! The stakes are far too high. Better training is what's needed.

    im 'not decided'.

I can see the deterent aspect and it seems to work in Europe where they carry a small sidearm but i cant get the gun culture of america out of my head which leads me to your other point alex, about making the criminals arm themselves.

I dont think the recent bradford incident would have been helped by firearms anyway as according to the news they were totally misinformed as the nature of the incident and shots had been fired before they had time to react or take cover.

I was hoping you would comment MLC. Cheers for your input.

Training and continual assessment would have to be very strict, I agree.

i agree that firearms shouldnt be carried by the "normal PC". This country is already turning into a "little america" in its claim culture, imagine how many claims would go in against the police for stress if they had the ability (or inclination) to pull theyre gun out just to stop the local hoody whos snatched some old dears purse. Keep it the way it is but as MLC says they need more training

More properly trained police is what is required for a start. Then have specially trained, armed units in major towns and cities. Gun culture is becoming the "norm" for gangs in some areas. Where will it lead to?

I wouldn't like to have an overt sidearm when dealing with a drunken crowd on a friday night. The consequences of someone grabbing hold of it don't bear thinking about.

ARV's are standard in most cities now already mate. But the first response is normally a Panda car and the protection is normally a stab vest.

Like Andy said - the intelligence was wrong about the Bradford incident, so no ARV was ordered.

I see your point. But do you think the site of an officer with a side arm might make them think twice.

Just trying to prevoke a discussion

I agree completely with MLC... I don't want to be carrying a firearm when i get out on the streets... I have complete trust in my Armed Response colleagues and if I walked into a situation where someone was pointing a gun at me and intent on doing me harm, having a weapon buttoned up in a holster on my hip would be no help whatsoever.

I think its a little unfair to use the unfortunate event in Bradford, where one of our colleagues has tragically died, to try and further this debate. There is little chance that the outcome would have been different had that officer been carrying a weapon or had any different training or equipment. There is also no reflection on the Intelligence used in despatching the officers to the job.

The type of incident, as reported in the news media, was a personal attack alarm activated by the persons at that Travel Agent. When a "PA" alarm is activated, there is no direct contact between the police and the victim, so the fact that it was an armed robbery would have been unknown at the time of the officers proceeding to investigate the Alarm activation. Unfortunately these are the risks of modern policing... quite often officers will be despatched to an incident which has been reported as one thing and find it to be something entirely different when they get there.
