To be fair, my eyesight is 20/20 and I noticed the benefits of having upgraded bulbs. In a modern society, it's shameful that car companies can get away with selling cars that have headlights as effective as having a glow worm taped to the bumper!

And why do no car magazines review headlight effectiveness? They spend paragraphs extolling the virtues of a car's ride and handling, but never mention the quality of the lighting. I'm guessing that most people spend more time driving at night than they do exploring the outer limits of their tyre's grip.

I can see quite well with my normal lights and I travel monthly from Leeds to Dresden at autobahn high speeds through the night, all the upgraded bulbs do is blind everybody else and non standard bulbs are illegal most european countries including Germany still does not stop them selling them mores the pity.

Firstly, you need to get your facts straight. The aftermarket bulbs aren't illegal at all, they are EU type approved and in fact some manufacturers fit the high performance bulbs as standard. Some bulbs are illegal true, the ones intended for night rallying for example are not for road use.

The standard lights on the vectra are so poor that fitting these bulbs brings them in line with many cars "normal" lights.

These halfords bulbs i've fitted to mine don't dazzel anyone.

I said if you read my mail correctly they are illegal in some european countries including Germany as it is a deviation from standard and thats the illegal part.

Im still on std bulbs in the Astra, I used +50 % bulbs in the vec, they were a good improvement on unlit roads. They were Osram silverstar - tested in Auto express as the best bulbs. They used a lighting tunnel and measured the lux levels at various distances, proper scientific test. Some so called up grade bulbs gave less light than std so be carefull. I will probably get round to fitting some at some point, they are about £20 for 2 H7's from a few internet suppliers.

I believe they now offer an even better bulb called the nightbreaker, about £25 a pair. If your going to upgrade may as well get the best. Not many car parts you can upgrade top top of the range and make a safety enhancement for £25...

Vauxhall should get their act together and stick HID/Xenons as standard on the top level trims like they did with the old Vectra CDX's and GSi's.....

Sorry mate, read your post too quickly and there's a word missing "in" I thought it was a comma missing when I first read it.

I put the Halfords super brilliance bulbs in my main beams when they were last on offer.
Very good bulbs in my opinion, but then i put them in my dipped beam and got some Philips xtreme +80% bulbs in my mains.

For the money the Halfords bulbs are excellent, but i think the Philips ones are a bit better (they should be for the money! £30 odd for 2 bulbs!)
