Depending on what the item is, you will pay import duty - there are different rates depending on what the goods are. On top of that you will also pay VAT @ 17.5%

I think you pay duty on anything over £18.. I bought some multimedia sockets for my tv and should have paid as the value was about £40 (luckily the postman just posted it even thought it had a big "YOU MUST PAY" sticker on it.

I've just bought another recently and the guy said he would put the value at $40 so I'm hoping there's no payment required..

    Thumbs up duty

Some firms will send it as a present therefore no duty to be paid

is the duty only payable on the price of the item not the postage. coz he's only charging £1 for the 100 items and the postage is upped a bit.

It's all down to how much the item is declared as being worth on the customs form by the shipper. Just marking it as a gift doesn't make it exempt from duty - it's what the declared value of it that is the criteria.

Potential problem with it being marked as a low value is that customs may get suspicious and inspect it, and you'll have the duty or VAT to pay. If you asked the shipper to mark it as low value, and it went missing in transit, then they may not compensate you the full amount as they will only be able to claim back the declared value.

    You take your chances!

I got a dvd player from china from Ebay and the seller marked it as a gift , then six weeks later got an invoice from DHL for £18 import duty. That is the seller promising no import duty and me leaving good feedback
