    Default EGR

hi folks, looking for some advice. I have a 54 plate vectra cdti 150. The emissions warning light just below the fuel gauge has came on and is staying on. I bought a diagnostics machine and it says its a fault with the EGR valve. I cleared the fault with the machine but shortly after starting up it re appeared again. Is it possible that the valve might just be sooted up as I've been running with a tuning box on? And is it easy to find/remove and clean or replace and do it yourself or is it a trip to the dealers?

EGR is a fairly common fault on the 1.9, they do get sooted up, to be honest they dont clean too good and fail quite quickly, but they aint cheap!! easy to change, sits at the back of the engine on the top at the right hand side as viewed from the front (the cars left hand side) remember to get the gaskets if you do get a new one.

    Thumbs up

Thanks sundance . You got any idea how much a new one would cost? I've been running the car for about 3 weeks with this light on and it doesn't seem to be doing it any harm, am I right in thinking this or will it do harm?

What code reader have you got that will also clear fault codes?

I was thinking did you expect to fix it just by clearing the code.

All it says on the machine is U581 and CAN OBDII. Vauxhall were wanting £75 just to look at the car on tech2 and this only cost me about £72 to buy. I really just bought it to see if it would tell me what the problem was as the handbook didn't shed much light on what the warning light actually meant, just said it was emissions warning light. It gives you the warning code and a very short description of what the fault is. Can also reset fault lights with it. Didn't expect to fix the problem with just clearing the code, quite a pointless task unless it's fixed properly

Not sure of the cost, i dont think it will cause any harm other than possibly lack of power and maybe higher fuel consumption, also if you have a DPF it may clogg it up quicker. Will try and find out how much it costs for you.
